A friend recently gave me his old Mac G3 ibook. I would like to reformat and install a new OS.

I do not own a Mac OS.

What would be the best free OS (linux)?

Specs:
Mac G3 Ibook (500mhz)
256MB
10GB HD
CD-Rom
Airport card

I would use it to surf or do some office work (If I can get office 2003) on it. Or ebay it..

thx.

you'll need Mac OS on CD ROM, version 8.6 or newer i think, but OS 9 or OSX are your best bet.

IMHO Ubuntu is extremely easy to use ( and install). For it to run smoother I recommend you ( if you can) to add a 256 stick.

Hope it helps :D

I tried ubuntu on my imac g3 with 256mb ram and it didnt run at all smoothly. The faster chip in the iBook might make a difference, but I doubt it would be a huge difference. A set of iBook restore CD's shouldn't cost you too much on ebay.

Depending on your Linux knowledge, you could install Gentoo on it. Best idea would be to burn a PPC copy of Ubuntu, burn the iso to a disc, boot it and see how it works.

lol you edited your first post for free OS' only, Here (http://penguinppc.org/about/distributions.php)'s a good list of PPC Linux distro's. Yellow Dog used to be the standard PPC Linux OS, but take a look at any of the 32 bit distro's on that list.
