I had to cut production on the 16 core Xeon box. It's been set not to get new tasks, and will finish the pending at night till done. hopefully i'll find some way to make that up.

Well thats a bummer:( Hopefully the finding something for replacing it goes well. So what does it do apart from wcg? 16 cores is a reasonable beast.

it's a backup server, going into active SQL Mirroring.

Are those 4 clowertowns?

4 dempseys / 16gb RAM

Wha happened?

it's been running passive backup on SQL Server through replication, but we are moving it into a active mission critical position as a Mirrored SQL Server, and the load is now monitored, and the cpu utilization per cpu needs to be accurate to SQL Server. the only way i could still monitor it correctly would be to assign proc. affinity every time it starts a new WU, and also assign affinity to specific cpus in SQL Server. plus we can't really run the risk of overloading during tasks.

Ahh, good reason. Figured it was something important.

Well, it was good while it lasted. :)
When they upgrade/replace it, a few years from now, tell 'em you want first dibs!
