amplifying Wlan?

well i've been working on a idea here to make a portable server to cover a relativly wide range with Wlan

the idea is to make a coffermod, put the entire server in that, and use 1 or 2 wlan cards and amplify their signal so they can serve/listen to more computers and have a bigger range.

problem:

i'm a electronics noob and would like to know if anyone got some info on doing this. i know i can use fractal antenna's etc to further boost reception etc but need more help with the amplifying itsself.

You could look into a signal booster unit for like TV reception, those should be available cheap....it should have the right amplifier circuitry, but what I don't know is, if those types of units only work on frequencies that TV signals are broadcast on, or if they will amplify anything you put through them. That would require some research.
