View Full Version : Got an AX-7? Need your temps...

I just got an AX-7 for my 1.2GHz Celeron Tualatin and I'm not all that impressed with it.

Now I know what I'm about to say sounds like a damn n00b but I can't help but think I've made a mistake or something. But, every review I've read has the AX-7 on some AMD platform that is putting out 60+ watts of heat and getting load temps of 35C or even 30C! I know I can't compare their setup to mine but it is a huge difference IMO that I can't ignore. I now have my CPU at 1.6GHz at 1.77v putting out 60watts with ambient at 25C and it's 40C at idle and 44-45C at load. That's with the case side panel off. It's stable but the temp is really starting to get to me. It just seems way too high for an AX-7 and an 84 CFM fan. I'm also using the new Artic Silver: Ceramique paste which I haven't seen any reviews on but is supposed to be on par with AS3.

Would removing the IHS on the Celeron help temps at all? What about the new Artic Silver paste. Good? Bad?

Also if anyone is using an AX-7 or has used one please post your CPU wattage with idle and load temps. Ambient would be good too but I'll settle with what ya got. :D

Here's a place to calculate your CPUs wattage:

...I was running one , max temp, full load with prime 95 was 41C. That was on a 1700+@2048MHz..you shouldn't be that hot at 1.6 with a Celeron..

Damn..

I think I'm going to take this new Ceramique paste off and put on some AS3.

Has anyone else tried this Ceramique stuff?

Well, I tried to take off the damn IHS but that thing is on there TIGHT. Anyone know of something that can dissolve the crap Intel used on these things?

I ended up having to lap the IHS because I slipped a few times trying to pry it off. I noticed that the IHS was slightly concave. While you'd think that would be the answer to my high temps it wasn't. I lapped it down till I hit 100% copper and it didn't do a damn thing, I checked the flatness of the AX-7 with a razor blade and that thing is as flat as you can get.

Any ideas or seeing something I'm missing?

I got the IHS off. Put a couple of nice deep gouges in the green substrate but it's not complaining so niether am I.. :D

Temps went down a whole damn 2C idle. I'm thinking my room is just too humid for anything lower. I'm going to try some better case fans and see if I can actually use the left case panel.. ;)

i get 37-13*c max with a nearly 800mhz overclock and 2.2volts.

stock speed in "OC mode" i can break 26*c on my 1800and 30onmy 2100(no clue why it runs so much hotter...)
