I am currently running the Swiftech MCX heatsink with a 2000rpm fan to cool a Athlon 2400+. At default speed/voltage my idle is about 50/load 58 with ambient at 30. If I get a 120mm to 80mm fan adapter and a 100 cfm 120mm fan to put on the swiftech heatsink how much of a temperature drop should I expect? I want to know if it is worth it to get a 120mm fan on my cpu. Thanks for the advice.

Also, does anyone know if the Akasa Acoustic Absorption pad (http://www.casecooler.com/anakacabmat.html) works well? It is supposed to absorb the sound from fans/harddrives.

Those temperatures are pretty high to begin with, though the 2000 rpm fan might expain that. I can imagine if you get 100 CFM through the heatsink, it will help a lot. I'm, also guessing that it will be more effective blowing away from the heatsink due to less flow resistance, but that's just a guess, and I recommend trying the 120mm blowing and sucking air off the heatsink.

yeah, you're temps are pretty high. which swiftech heatsink are using?

i'd try a few things before you buy an adapter and bigger fan.
- reseat the HSF
- lap the HSF (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6175&highlight=lapping)
- improve case airflow
- try a more powerful 80mm fan on the heatsink

from my experience, those "Acoustic Absorption" products help a little, but also raise temps.
