I had to return the E6700/P5B Dlx "loaner; time was up. BUMMER! :(

I got to thinking, "hmmm, I have a new CC, maybe I can juggle a little some-some".

So, while I was there I picked up this board and chip, to "borrow" for a bit. It is not normally a board I'd buy to keep, but since it is just temporary, I thought I'd check it out.

And then there is the TForce P965 board that came in on Friday. It is to be paired up with an E6400 I bought a little bit ago. I thought I'd show a few pics of that, its' box and contents. I also included a pic of the ICS clockgen. The first pic is some of the other stuff going into the build; chip, optical drive, VC.

I'll be putting these rigs together later today, and I'll post some results then.

A fancy contents bag. Really not much in there, but the bag is kind of a cool touch. It has two compartments.

Seems like plenty of space around the socket, for those who might need it.

Pull that TForce 965PT sticker next to the NB off and show us what's silkscreened on the PCB.

I am partial to Biostar, and I am VERY interested in this new one, maybe my FIRST Intel???:D

Well, the Intel board is in my opinion, an official POS.

It took me multiple attempts installing and uninstalling various programs just to get it to run at stock speed. It kept wanting to drop down to 6x.

There is minimal adjustments in the BIOS. NO where to adjust CPU speed. Only able to turn off EIST, but not C1E. No voltage adjustments.

Systool will not work. The system uninstalled it after attempting to run it.
Clockgen doesn't have the UDT clockgen listed, but I'll look again, so no OC.

I did install Rightmark CPU Clock Utility. After multiple attempts I ended up getting it to run profiles. Along the way I found out the HSF ( stock Intel ) wasn't on quite right ( thermal issues ). After shutting down and getting that one corner of the HS down, things are better. It will run stock speeds now. :) But that is it.

I think I'll be taking this back, like maybe tomorrow. :)

I suppose this board is fine for office computers...

Now on to the Biostar.

TForce system is up and crunching at a nominal OC (400 MHz ). Plenty to explore there. Will need to spend more time. Have to sleep; got to get up for work in 4 hours.

I am almost sure you wont be dissapointed with the BioStar board.
If you hit a FSB wall which is below 500Mhz, you have to get a better NB cooler. The one on the board is definately not made to cope with the heat.
If you havent already, flash to Stilt's bios for more bios options.

Below the PT sticker it will say Deluxe.
The rumour is that they have supply issues with the ICH8R, so they are using the ICH8, which misses raid functionality and only has 4 sata ports, the deluxe has 6.
But the boards are physically the same with that little exceptions, which means they will oc the same and you can flash deluxe bios on the PT too.

I am pretty disappointed with this board. Other than the not-meant-for-us Intel 965 board I'm still "boorowing" this board is, by far, the least satisfying. And that is being kind. I'm home sick the last day or so, and have had time to mess with it. I'm RMAing, very flaky.

Have already ordered a replacement(s).

Um I have no idea what you are exactly talking about.
You confused me a little bit.
So you are saying the 965PT sucks.
Could you go into more detail please, Scott?

Using an E6400. Couldn't get over 362 FSB, even with loose timings. This was 1:1 . So that is where it sits. I'll let it run there til I get replacements. Can not change multi, no option for that. The machine had to be shutdown, then started cold to boot up after most changes in the BIOS ( or, if it would reboot, it would just kick me back to 266 ). The RAM is Patriot DDR667, and does real well on an Asus P5B-Dlx.

I tried Stilt's BIOS, that is what is currently on there. I'd like to have changed the NB heatsink, but did not want to lose RMA ability.

Just not very impressed much at all with it. Particularly with having to turn off the PSU and then turn back on after most adjustments. Plus I definitely want to get this chip up into the low to mid 3xxx's.

I was definitely interested after seeing some users experiences with the Dlx board, but it doesn't look like my experience will be anything like theirs. Unless I learn something, or find a "key", by the time I need to send it in/get the replacements, my experience with this board will be short. Was definitely hoping for better.

I know you've had very good experiences with the AMD Biostars. I was hoping for the same.

Hmm that sounds strange.
I have seen a lot of people hitting a wall at that speed. With a better NB cooler they were able to run 550Mhz.
I also read that the board doesnt like a lot of Micron sticks :/

Yeah, I thought of just redoing the goop under the stock cooler, and aiming a fan at it. I have a Swiftech 159 I could have put on it, but didn't want to void my return rights.

Thing was irritating me so much, especially the having to turn all the way off, unplug and turn back on, that I gave up on it. As I said I've already ordered replacements and have an RMA# as of this morning for it. When they get here I'll send it in.

I'm not real sure what is under the 'spreaders ( Jeez, I hate 'spreaders! ) on those Patriots. I heard Micron D9xxx, but only up to a certain date. I think mine are after that date, they're fairly new. I've had them about 2 months, maybe less.

I'm wondering what chips are used in the Buffalo Firestix. I ordered the DDR800's, not the DDR1000's. There is a little confusion there. Some indications are that they use D9GKX IC's, but it isn't real clear. The FSX1000D2C-K2G's do for sure. I'm sure the "800"'s are at least D9GMH

More than welcome. But the bedrooms are full of computers. I do have room on the couch. I hope you like a lotta fan noise... Kinda hard to get away from it. The very few times ( almost burning the house down with electical wiring problems, the occasional power outtage, etc. ) that they're not running is very disconcerting; you get so used to 'em.

BTW, If you can get an extra set of credentials, I'd love to check out CES. It is not open for the public...

Well if you wanna come I'll be going with Charles and prolly Jinu... Not sure who else is coming... I'll see if I can get you in with us... But if you go to their site you can register for free still (I think).. Check it out and let me know.

Yeah, I've been to there site before, etc. I get an invite every year, but it is a two step process. The second step is to confirm you do, indeed, have an industry involvement and you need to send proof of that. Something quasi-official. Like on somebody's ( company's or firm's ) letterhead. I thought of making one up in Photoshop but could never be arsed enough about it to bother. It is one thin to fill out the initial application, but to bother with the second step; well I never went that far.

But interested in going. :)

Well, anyway, back to the original point of this thread. bout putting logs on the fire.

I've been robbing one system to get another going. You know "stealing" RAM from one established system to get another one up and running, etc. That kind of thing.

Well, I can get my DS3 system back to full complement, as well as my S3. I got my Crucial 10th Anniversary DDR2 in just a little bit ago. I'm wondering what IC's are in there... D9GMH, hopefully. Need to get these systems humming and not chokin'. I prefer to run Cancer jobs, ad it is best to have 2 GBs for that.

Sweet looking sticks, that don't come with a label. What they are is what they are. A limited edition, production run. No new revs or whatever, so no label necessary. The price is what really sold me as I know they're using decent IC's, and DDR2 prices have been obscene in the last month.
If they run half as nice as they look that'll be great.

They can do 400mhz cl3 at 2.4v, so those sticks cant be bad :)
And 230$ for 2Gb is damn nice , considering what ram costs right now.

Show us some numbers :D

I am not a very accomplished bencher or OCer. I need a lot of help and guidance.

I ran out of time, must go to sleep soon for work. But I did try some things.

With 2.35v on the RAM. 1.48 VCore I booted at 400x9 w 3-4-4-12. Got online, DLed some files, but ultimately the system wasn't happy.

[XC] serlv
10-26-2006, 10:48 PM
The system is setup on a mobo box and there was really nowhere to setup a fan for the RAM. I did juryrig an 80mm, low speed fan angled over the DIMMS, but I think I need to get this in a case so I can get a better cooling setup going.

For now, I ended up upping the VCore to 1.5, and moving the timings to 4-4-4-14. That should get it stable through the night and I can mess with it some more tomorrow. I've been on it now, for a while, and it seems "ok" for now. Much more work to be done, but must sleep.

So more to come, but not tonight.

If cl3 doesnt run at 400Mhz, you could try 4 3 3 8, but if you are not running pi, it wont make much of a difference on Intel platforms, so you might use 4 4 4 12 aswell. :/

don't feel bad. i got a poor E6600 batch and i need 1.55v to hit 3.4ghz stable.

Scott,

Just take a fan and lay it either right on top of the ram or on top of vidcard and stock cooler so that it blows on nb and ram. Also, don't worry about loosening your timings a little. C2d gets relatively small improvement from tighter timings.
