Prices for Intel quad-core desktop CPUs available
Monica Chen, Taipei; Steve Shen, DigiTimes.com [Wednesday 18 October 2006]

Intel's first quad-core desktop processor, the Core 2 Extreme QX6700, which is scheduled to be released next month, will sell for US$999 in 1,000-unit quantities, according to sources at Taiwan motherboard makers who are familiar with Intel's latest roadmap. The Core 2 Quad Q6600 processor will be available in January 2007 at US$851, the sources added.

As prices for both the QX6700 and Q6600 are too high, it will prevent the quad-core CPUs from gaining popularity, stated the sources. According to Intel's roadmap, quad-core processors will only account for 3% of the company's total desktop CPU shipments within one year following the launch, the sources indicated.

The sources suggested that prices of quad-core CPUs may start declining in the third quarter of 2007 when Intel is expected to launch its next-generation quad-core processors, codenamed Yorkfield. At the same timeframe, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will likely begin releasing its own quad-core CPUs, the sources said.

Don't think the pricing for those are too high per say, as they are around double the price of dual cores.

Hasn't any lower-end CPU been announced yet?

Looks like they are just putting Quad core out on the uber high end for bragging rights

Expected... but good to see the Q6600 at only 850.

Yes, this is the only reason.

seems to be the case. I don't think Intel even cares if this product is a screaming success or not. It's just revenue and 'beating AMD to the punch,' if you will.

prices look pretty good.. This means AMD's K8L will be around the same price! wOOT

true, but do you seriously expect quad core for the masses? even amd's roadmap shows the mainstream processor antares is dual core.

lets be honest single core Dells are what standard people buy. NOT US

beg to differ, again.

single core HP/Compaq are what standard people buy. single core dells are more for corporate/smb users. dell's consumer business isn't that attractive as it doesnt have price advantage and it has no store displays. just my 2 cents.

wow $850 for a 4 core CPU in which 2 core will be pretty much useless for gaming . meh i pass.

150$ difference between the extreme and the non extreme chip
that doesn?t make any sense

This is a kickass deal for a workstation.. the rendering / video editing performance you get is amazing for the price. For games - useless.

yups.. i think mostly for workstations.. but most application cant use multicore rightnow.. hope they catch up with the hardwares.. :D

i dunno how you guys are saying prices are that great.

They can definitely afford to sell these at a $400 price point and still make a profit; look at the c2d 6300, its not gonna be that much more expensive to package two of those dies together, so double the price and they could sell at $400 and make profit easily. (i know cache differences, whatever, package allendales for the masses)

the q6600 isnt even coming out until q1 and its gonna be 850$? that sounds like a ripoff to me.

Somewhere else, xbit i think, said the q6600 was going to be ~$500, which sounded reasonable for a q1 follow up to qx6700.

yeah I would have got the Q6600 if it was 500$ but 850$ is almost a joke :S, especially for a non-native quad core :(.

Totally agree, far too expensive.

I think I will wait for Yorkfield on 45nm as well which should be faster and cheaper. By 3Q2007 Vista will have had some polish applied, DDR3 will be out or DDR2 will be faster and cheaper and perhaps snowgrass or whatever it is called, the Robson type NAND memory for desktops, will be available to use with the motherboards. Should be a nice system.

Andy

Way too expensive. As kemist says, 2x E6600 are 630€, why is the Q6600 850$? And don't tell me € is higher than $, because they doesn't apply the currency change. If it's 850$ it will be 850€ don't ask me why. It's not taxes, they manufacture the chips in China and Taiwan :D

And we don't even use 2 cores except maybe on Vista. In RC1/2 with WinRAR extracting is the first time I've seen both cores at 100% used. Not counting prime or Orthos of course, talking about real life software. In Xp CPU usage varies from 35-55%. Here's a SS of WinRAR extracting a 4Gb file:

What do we need 4 cores for?

K8L or Yorkfield for me, maybe an E6600 meanwhile

ocuk are saying round the £720 to £800 mark in the uk in 3 to 5 weeks

Meh... I would consider getting a Q6600 at 600$ but 850$ is just too much. Nevermind, I'll move to quad core when I completely change my system. Not soon mind you.

It'll probably launch on November the 1st (http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=35194). Intel is said to have brought the launch date forward by 2 whole weeks.
PS. I'm talking about QX6700 ofcourse.
