Main reason I see to go for a X-fi (or any other new creative card) as I see it is to get the highest versions of EAX. 1.0 and 2.0 is supported by other cards and even onboard audio chips.

So just how many games use higher then 2.0 eax? And if they do, and you dont have higher then 2.0 eax, will it downscale to 2.0?

i think a lot of games probably have an option for eax 3, default to eax 2, and have an option to have software-implemented positional sound, and it's taken care of for you automagically by the game detecting what sound card you're using, same way games can detect your video card and make changes based on that too.

personally, getting a better sounding sound card is probably a better investment than eax 3, but that's just my opinion.

Almost all new games and some older ones use/support EAX4+
