The new Power6 central processing units will reportedly run at 4GHz – 5GHz clock-speeds, will contain 8MB of level-two cache and will have “link to external memory” with 75GB/s bandwidth, according to EETimes web-site. The chip will have the same execution pipeline as the current Power5 MP970, but will effectively double the bandwidth and clock-speed of the existing part, which operates at up to 2.50GHz. Nevertheless, the chip will still consume the same amount of power.

lookie the first processor to hit 5GHz retail...
I hope they make a Socket F version

I volunteer to beta test that chip today...

I wonder if apple is regretting their change to intel now?

I was just thinking the same thing lol. This cpu sounds like it could be more powerful than K8L (at least in theory).

IBM's problem was never design, it was implementation.

They were massively behind the curve w/ the Power4 core and couldn't get the yields up enough to satisfy Apple's need for chips.

That's the underlying reason they switched.

But the high end mac's used the Power5?

nope they used the 97xx and 74xx series

Apple must be regretting the intel switch, with this and PA Semi's PWRficient cpu.

Go IBM . To bad its not an X86 cpu. Than we could do a threesome. What makes you think Apple won't switch back to IBM . If Ibm made it socket f compatiable than Apple could use either AMD chips for X86. Compatiable or they could use IBM Chips the best of both worlds right. I find this much more interesting

Now this will be a computing monster.

Damn, right! VIA and IBM are gonna dominate, down with AMD and Intel ;)

wow, IBM came out of nowhere with a super processor! that was a bit of a surprise. Wish they made some of these power6 processors for consumer desktops.

5Ghz Power PC can rival anything Intel and AMD have...impressive indeed.

if it comes to Socket F, then anyone can have it in a desktop, pretty cheap too. (pity windows doesn't support PowerPC)

from that you got "faster than AMD and intel" ?

did we look at the same link

exactly. What is the point of an awesome CPU if they can't be purchased.

5 GHZ , dual core , 8 MB of cache how they can keep this thing cool with all these stuff packed inside may be using 0.8v can do miracles

That cpu is a beast!

It all depends on when its actually avaliable to buy. After all, close to 4ghz wolfdales will be out in a years time, which I believe have higher IPC than a power PC core. And paired with quad channel ddr3 would match the memory bandwidth IBM are aiming for.

The power 6 looks really nice if IBM can hit their targets (something they haven't been able to do in the past in regards to both clockspeeds and thermal envelopes), and will certainly be great for big tin use, but in terms of a desktop part, its performance will only be a ppc alternative to the intel/amd chips of its launch period - which shows IBM have at least made excellent progress catching the x86 players up on performance.

These sound really intreseting, i'd like to see how they perform in RL.
