Would anyone be interested in a lowest 3dMark score contest? I think an important requirement would be that your CPU/video usage has to be 0% when idle, like a normal PC, before starting (so you don't just use an app to make it busy.) So it would be a hardware competition - finding the slowest machine that would support each 3dMark and then finding out how to make it as slow as possible in hardware, then watching 3dMark run.

I got the idea from a motorcycle competition where they'd see who could get to the finish line last... riding slower than everyone else is pretty hard :)

hmmm... that would be interesting. But easily won (I reckon...), since I could use a tool like ati tool to change my 3d clocks to basically 0 and could throttle the cpu in a similar way (even in bios set fsb to like 1Mhz)

I have a P3 laptop w/ 256MB ram that was given to me for free I could enter. I don't even know what clockspeed it is either, heh. Okay found out, 500MHz P3... has a 14" lcd, but ghosting, and runs XP lol. Also a micronpc.

flash to f1 bios=66fsb. 6*66 e6400 with 6-6-6 ddr2@133 with x850xt (borrowed) at around 150/150 (lowest it goes stably iirc). might as well turn off the pump and induce thermal throttling as well. drop the scsi bus speed to the lowest legacy mode. yeah, i think that's pretty unbeatable for % drop to highest scores possible with the same hardware setup.

this is a dumb competition.

I'll try and run 3DMark 99 on my PII lappy. :p:

I ran 3dmark99 on P1 166Mhz iirc and 2Mb Ati videocard. Was about ~600 vga score and ~800 CPU. I have P133 lying around, anyone want to compete?

I have a P100. Ownt :p:

GPU cards have lower limits too, you can't decrease clocks indefinitely. Hey maybe xtreme cooling helps :D

Yes, 3dmark needs MMX and it needs at least directx 6 or 7 (ofcourse you need dx9 for newer 3dmarks)

Which 3dmark?

Says you :) Same hardware is not a requirement. Just like any WR, any way you can do it is fine. I can't imagine your settings on a DDR2 system would out-suck that guy's P100. But it's interesting, since older BIOSs are harder to tweak the way you're doing with that BIOS.

Good posts from all, given me some good thoughts. This is certainly the kind of competition where tweaking rules would have to be spelled out. I think the fun of it is digging up terrible performing hardware - agreed, it is easy to drop bus speeds and all sorts of other things, the hard thing would be having everything at stock settings, the way someone who actually owned that computer would be using it. Still lots of room to maneuver though. You could install really terrible drivers, use the oldest BIOS possible, god-awful PCI ATA-33 controllers, and use your least favorite patch-level of Windows with all the default services left running.

I recall an old motherboard we had to buy to reproduce a bug. It was a ZIDA Tomato, and at the time we had a lot of similar PII motherboards in use (like the rock-solid Asus P2B). We had to do a lot of testing on the Tomato so we tried to match it with good RAM, hard disk, etc. But OH MY GOD this thing was slow. I mean ridiculously slow, something like 30% of the performance of a P2B. Just mind boggling to watch it go, like watching paint dry really. It actually had a Tomato colored heatsink - not red, not orange... Tomato colored... god I hated that board (and I didn't even do much of the testing.)

So what if the rules are, BIOS defaults, driver defaults?

If I had kept my AST 66MHz Pentium w/ 8MB ram, I'd own the competition :D

I still have my Cyrix 75Mhz laptop somewhere. There was lowest Spi times thread somewhere too.

i got 31 in 2k1 (2nd lowest) it was quite fun to figure out how to get a score that low

its actually not that low :)

I just ran a score of 90 on a brand new core solo laptop and a 150 on a core duo.

i should get out my grandma's first computer... hard drive was like 400mb and it had like 16mb of system memory. dont think that would score too high in 3dmark - nonetheless support the program...
NOT fast. lol

i think ill stick to competing for the highest score... lol

for 3dmarks need atleast cpu with MMX support. IIRC first was P166Mhz MMX. As for competition its worthless, because i dont think anyone have eniac nowadays :D

It wasnt that long ago My first "PC" had 8mb ram and 75mhz and cost me $1700 back in 1993. Before that it was c64 with the 3MB hard drive attachment that clipped on the side and a few amigas.

The video card is what makes a big diff in this test. I mean come on.... I have a Centrino Core Duo scoring a 150 out of the box (not tweaked down) and a Centrino Solo scoring a 90!

I guess i could go home and drop in my imagine128 PCI card but i really dont have that much time to waste waiting fot the PCmark to finish. Those would score very low.

I had like 62 in 3dk06 with a Willamete@1.7, 758Mb PC133 and a stock 9600Pro, so with less RAM and a 5200/9200 the score should be close to 0. There was a thread when 3dk06 was released, try to find it :D

Haha I'd love to compete. I could try and rig up a calculator to run 3dmark and see how well that scores!
