I picked this up recently and have been taking a look at how much electricity is being used by my crunchers. With a sky high electricity bill, I wanted to keep certain crunchers on and certain ones part time. Pretty nifty little tool for $25.

Quick reference... My dual Xeon 1.6GHz LV rig burns 220W while crunching, and about 115W idling. Quite a difference, and only running 1.5v vcore. Minimal drives too, and this doesn't include the monitor.

I'd hate to see a power hungry dual core P4 with a ton of vcore!

LOL. Yeah. My dedicated PIII cruncher only has an 88w PSU so I know that draws less than 100 load :). My PC, prolly around 200 load.

My D820 consumes 350@ full load, and that is only with 1.3 VCore... If I raise it to 1.5 or 1.6, the CNPS can't keep up and the power sky-rocketes towards 400, 450 Watts :D

We got an overview of the year's last power use:

2002-2003: 4200 kWh, Martijn still has his old P2 350 :p:
2003-2004: 4100 kWh, Martijn upgraded to a P2 450 and overclocked it to 510, daddy tries to reduce power overall
2004-2005: 4000 kWh, Martijn now has a P3 600 @ 740, daddy managed to reduce the overall power usage after all
2005-2006: Martijn buys his D820 rig and starts running D2OL on it, result: 4600kWh :slap:

So don't get one, even if it's free (because it definitely isn't :p:)

By the way, these are the other systems in the house:
Pentium 3 800 @ 900: 80 Watts
Pentium 3 1000, everything onboard, 60 Watts
Pentium 4 1.8 @ 2.4, 150 Watts
Pentium 4 2.4 @ 3.2, 180 Watts
Pentium M 1.86 (laptop), 60 Watts

The most power-efficient system I ever had in this house was a 286 @ 11Mhz, the system used 20 Watts overall :D

3 DX rigs and 1 XP2200 crunching... and for now the FX60 is on DČOL also... so I'm using about 1000Watts 24/7. Guess I'll have to put in some overtime at work:D

lol, I don't want to even imagine... Especially with new folding client on graphics card consumption would be like 24/7 gaming...

At the "highest crunching point" I had a dual Opty 165 @ 2.9GHz, an A64 3200+ @ 2.7GHz, 2x Dothan laptops, 1x 3.2GHz Prescott P4, and 1x 2.0GHz Northwood / Willy P4. I think that's when I got the $700+ power bill... Since then, there has been less crunching going on...

My mac mini (T7600) draws 38w peak under load. I might have to get more of these little suckers. :D

Checked dual opty @ 2.9GHz... Also 215W or so crunching. Better than I thought truthfully.

Wow so mine has to be under 200w, maybe. I only have one HDD, two opticals, 5 fans, 2 white CCFL's, etc. The pump uses some power though.

NickS,

For comparison... That Opty rig mentioned above has the following:

DFI LP NF4 Ultra, stock volts on chipset.
2x1GB sticks, 2.8V.
Opty 165, 1.525V.
7800GT, stock volts.
3x HDDs
2x Opticals
Soundcard
5 fans total, 3 of which are at 5V.
2x CCFLs (which were not running at the time. Turning them on adds another 6-7W).
Laing D5, ~3 setting.
EDIT: Also has some LEDs, but that should be close to nothing... The case does not allow me to turn those off though.

Antech NeoHE 550W. This is supposed to be a pretty efficient PSU, so that MIGHT make a difference, don't know.

And all that amounts to 215W or so total when crunching (no 3D video).

Holy crap mine must draw nothing.

I should pick one of these up and see how much my rig draws. The room sure is a lot cooler when I have it off, indicating that I might be drawing quite a bit.

They're pretty cheap at $25, a worthwhile cost IMO.
