The Sony DRU500AX is a beautiful piece of hardware. (Same beast as the DRU500A but with the latest firmware) Writes + & - and has great media compatability. You won't go wrong with this one.
For more info than you could possibly ever want with a minimum of bickering, check out the forums at dvdrhelp: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=17 Lots of good info.
Once you pick one up, whatever brand, check out www.doom9.org for a wealth of how to's. Be warned though, it sucks up more of your spare time than overclocking. Enjoy!

I know what you're going through. Had to wait a few weeks to find one in local stores and they don't stay on the shelves very long. CompUSA has them for $349, you can check by zip code for local availability on their site.

how do you find out what your DVD ROM plays...

also do you happen to know what the PS2 plays + or -?

22b, sorry to see there's no stock. Went through the same thing out here checking the site daily until they got 2 (and only 2) in.
PC DVD player should play all formats. Stand alone units are a toss up. There's a decent compatability chart here: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers and according to the chart PS2 will play CDR DVD-R DVD-RW DVD+R & DVD+RW (3rd or 4th page)

Ps2 is more dependent on Quality of media rather than format.... Some Ps2 won't play nothing But Apple DVD-R, others will consume anything you can put in them, most are happy with pretty much any mid range media..... Just depends on the laser...
