Get an SB-Live 24-Bit. Cheap, good.

Stay away from the live cards. Get your self a nice used A2 ZS. I got mine for 50$ 6 months ago. Now I see ppl getting rid of them for 30-40$. Great sound card and there is not much difference between it and the X-FI cards, plus with your low end speakers no reason to spend alot.

Not sure if its too late but audigy or xfi cards will help, onboard sound for p5b is crap.

are either of these decent upgrades over onboard?

how would sound cause a dec in fps

onboard sound can reduce fps because onboard sound consumes significantly more cpu cycles than a seperate sound card.

With my system, you will barely notice a few fps difference with onboard vs the xfi. I get the crackle problem at any volume with Highs on my board so I opted for a soundcard. If you dont have the problem, soundcard is not necessary.

the crackle problem is an issue of the pci bus and pci latency. see this thread for the fix:

I'd grab a Audigy 2 ZS off eBay.

Watch out for the OEM ones though unless you want the extra challenge of finding a working app/driver CD. Creative sticks different PCI IDs on their OEM cards and their downloadable drivers won't work with them unless you mod some INFs. You can always get the drivers from whatever OEM sold the card, say Gateway or Dell, etc.

Driverheaven forum can help with the OEM cards and drivers.

you can try to flash a sound blaster live 5.1 to audigy 4 or something crazy like that theres a tutorial on extremeoverclocking.com

i got the same board the onboard isnt bad i also have a audigy 2 zs plat pro for games but am havving problem with vista and its drivers (no rear sound)

a pimp thing to do is use a audigy for your games and at the same time use the onboard for talking on teamspeak/vent and your game sound goes throught your main speakers and you teamspeak goes through you headset you just tell your teamspeak to use the onboard specifically
