Ati is in the process of making the power of the GPU compatible with scientific projects. It's called stream computing.

Read about it here. (http://ir.ati.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=105421&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=910519&highlight=)

Something tells me this is definately most beneficial to us, xtremesystems. I can see Kentsfield and 1950xtx CF systems crucnhing WCG before the end of the year. :D

This moday a new F@H client will be released that workes 40 times faster than current only because of the stream computing on 1900 or 1950 based cards... :woot:

And thank God for the fusion Ati/AMD.

ok i want it to crunch for wcg not f@h .... but it its the only thing we can have well i guess im going to use my video cards for F@H and help the team there

Wat about nVidia cards?

No news on nVidia cards that I've heard of. I cant wait for Monday 2nd. Time to set my X1900GT and X1900CFE to crunching!

David Kirk was talking about folding on GPUs a few years ago when he came to our uni. Too bad there are still no real results with nvidia cards :/
Not that I dont like ATi, but the latest ATi card I have is a 9800Pro.
Do ATi cards have a better FPu than nvida cards? I am not that up-to-date about their design any more :(

so when will we see boinc take advantage of this? because this greatly impacts what graphics cards i would buy.

I don't care what project is going to run on my X1300... It is for the science, but it'll probably be F@H :)

i think it's for 1900 or 1950 gpu's only not the 1600 or 1300 gpu's.

It's for the R5** series as far as I know... It will definitely run slower, of course :)

Any x1900 or x1950 GPU only. However this does include the x1900GT, as well as the 256 variants. :)

no, all x1K series cards. The reasoning behind using current-generation ATI GPUs only right now is fairly logical: many many more programmable shaders. Also, nVidian cards have some disadvantages to x1K cards presently, such as registers that bog down with a lot of activity, x1K's superior branch prediction, and x1K's superior FP32.
next gen cards, however... well, its too soon to say, but i suspect that all of them (nvidian and DAAMIT cards) will be supported

so my x1300in my lappy will work? damn if this thing gets hot with the cpu working at 100% 24/7 imagine with the gpu lol

Yeah, it probably will :)

Yes, it works on all X1... cards. I dont know about Nvidia's.

But what I really love about this is that it finally gives me a good reason to buy X1950xtx crossfire... lol ;)

even if they only "limited" you to the 1900 series you can always fake the deviceID.

hint hint.

Has anyone tryed it yet? :D

EDIT: :banana::banana::banana:, can only folding@HOME be attached to it?

Wat about nVidia cards?
Most nVidia cards are FP24 which makes then little to no use in scientific calculations
