So a USB has 4 wires, well what if you plugged a thumbdrive in a wrong way?
in the case-to-motherboard-connection :slapass:

It kind of seized to erm work :stick:

deeply inhale all the magical smoke that you most certainly let out of some ICs. In this magical smoke are all the answers to your problems.

(in other words, you're probably SOL)

Not counting the ground wires that more and more cases seem to leave out for onboard usb connections...aren't there like 6-7 wires?

You let the smoke out of it.
Sorry but you can't put the smoke back in it.

Heh, well the light on it still turns on when plugged in

It's one of these drives:

And that's an LED on the left

the light just means its getting power. You can desolder the two data lines on a USB port and plug taht drive in and the light will still turn on. All it means is that the drive is sorta working and that the 5v line on the usb port is working.

Take it to bits and see if its just traces or components that burnt.

I used to fix thumb drives when I was working for epox.

Most of them had a trace that would burn up and act like a fuse (im not sure if this was accidental or a design intention) but you could repair them easy enough.

You would think that they would put a little smd fuse on the 5v line and some caps on the data lines to act like fuses... but that would be too much to ask for.

wouldn't just some diodes on the data lines do everything needed? :stick:

Well i had a nice time fying a few things that were USB. Reconnected my mobo and connected up the USB case port with the Firewire point on the MB by accident. Was wondering why USB wasnt working and why windows was throwing up errors. In no order, until i realised my mistake, i fried Asetek Waterchill USB interface - 100% dead, MP3 player - 100% fried, and damaged thumbdrive. Thumbdrive still works in USB 1 mode (ie not fast but still works).
