I have a new i945G mobo here and am running a 250 gig WD SATA drive. I installed the Intel INF utility and it gave me the Intel controllers for ICH7 in the Device Manager. However, the drives are only in UDMA 5 mode. This reminds me of my nForce4 when I don't install NV's drivers (but then they are in UDMA 6). What's the trick to getting SATA 3.0Gb speed? Do I need the Intel Matrix Storage driver. This board has no RAID.

Are there any options in the BIOS that have the option for "AHCI"? I know that with my P5B-Deluxe (ICH8R) if I leave the SATA mode to "IDE" it'll emulate it and run in UDMA5, but switching to AHCI enables all the neat SATA things. You might have to reinstall Windows (and load the drivers during the Windows install via F6), since when I switched to AHCI from IDE I couldn't load Windows.

Well the board is a ASUS P5L-MX 945G/ICH7. I looked in the BIOS and found this Enhanced Mode option, but it is already enabled and has been since I built the machine.

Ok so I was pondering this whole situation with the drive saying it was in UDMA 100. I actually tried a Promise SATA150 TX2 PCI controller, and with that Sandra and the card said "UDMA 133". That can't be right cuz that controller is SATA 150 for sure.

So I pondered. I downloaded HDTACH and found that this drive is most definitely in SATA 3.0GB/s mode cuz of the burst rate it gave in this bench. So, don't believe what Windows says in device manager.
