As the thread title states, the Cell processor will operate at 3.2Ghz in the PS3 after all. Some good news for Sony. They still have yield problem for the blue-ray laser and Cell processor though, so 500M consoles on the release date is far from sure.

it doesn't matter how bad the PS3 hardware is or isn't... if its got the words "PS3" on it... it will sell.

finally some good news from Sony! I was hoping it wouldn't suck, despite all of the critism.

I think the 2.8Ghz rumour was dismissed officially by Sony a while ago, they officially confirmed back then that the Cell would be 3.2Ghz.
The real rumour that is going around which worries me is that apparently the GPU will be downgraded from 550Mhz to 500Mhz, as well as the GPU memory speed to some extent.
Good luck to Sony.

Traditionally I'd agree. However with the exploitation of the internet, everyone, nearly everyone just browsing around or googling info on their next anticipated video game system knows of these problems and stumbling blocks for the ps3, whether they understand it or not.

Back in the day, when there were only hard copy press releases, all we knew was what the company press released and it came out as fast as they could print it.

Nowadays, anyone can start a website, take a rumour/speculation and just run with it, totally can explode things out of proportion. Having said that I don't doubt the heavy troubles with the PS3...but it's true...I talk to random people around my campus about video game systems, and pure nerd or not they've heard of such problems and the pricing, etc etc. and are all rather unexcited about the PS3's launch.

Well it seems reasonable to me. It is in fact basically a computer. Look at the Xbox 360. A 250W or so External Power Supply in the form of a Huge adaptor. But youre right...400W is a lot.

Hopefully they'll come to their senses and raise the gpu core clock.

Any heat concerns will be addressed with the 65nm shrink, but the launch performance will remain with the console for life.

Noisy first run consoles due to higher speed fans would be better than a console that underperforms for its lifetime.
