View Full Version : Quad P3 Style Xeon worth it?

We had some older dual/quad Xeon 400mhz - 500mhz servers here that we un-deployed. My boss told me if I wanted them to snag them up otherwise they where going in the trash. So of course I snagged em. Would they be worth putting on anything? (remember i have dial-up until i move).

Just saw that Levi ;) I'll PM Jose, but my Google search isn't returning much.

if these are quad xenon 500 these will be faster than an p4@2,5 so it would be even worth throwing them @ wcg. They will make like 100 boinc points per day @ wcg

Brot,
Not 100% sure what the specs are on them, i'll have to look again. I know there is at least one Quad Xeon 400-450mhz with 2gb ram. The others are dual Xeons in the same speed range IIRC.

The bad thing is, these are huge 6U Micron Netframes lol.

Actually, they are the bottom 3 in the 3rd rack.

:slobber: quad xeon...6u... I love old server stuff :p:

The project I think people are reffering to is prime sierpinski problem - sieve which we dont have any vault points for. I've never run it before but the vault links you to here: http://www.mersenneforum.org/showthread.php?t=2665 which looks to be a very thorough guide. :toast:

Ouch.. not sure I like this project. Sounds like we need it, but its a manual client.

When your entire range is done (indicated by proth_Sieve when it asks for more work), email /PM all the factors from fact.txt to ltd. Remember to use your mersenneforum username and not your real name.

Then post a message here saying something like this

25350-25351 range completed by Your_Username.

In the same message post a message saying what range you would like to reserve next. Now since you know how long it took you to do a billion, reserve a range that you can finish in a week and no sooner or longer.

You can see your progress in the next stats update located here: -

Wasn't it Leiden Classical with the short WUs? :)

That may be a good project fo you to look into Wes. I think the teams just started there and as Martijn said the wu's are very short only a few minutes long so are very p3 friendly ;). :toast:

Wes: send me a number from those units, they may take up to 700's or 900's...700's are cheap..like $25.00 a pair for 700/2mb/100's..the 900's still bring some money but my old dual 700 did 450 a day in rosy.
Let me know the part# on them and I'll see what they can take.
PS: They are free pal, grab them..;)
PC100 ECC Reg ram is still saleable

47.3kg to be exact.

I'd love to have one of those... then figure out what clockgen it uses and force the CPU's to 2.0v!! lol :D

Would you beleive I grabbed that off of ebay last August for $127.50?
Last day of the auction I even called another bidder and asked him to pull out as I REALLY wanted it and he did!
Then another $191.12 to get it here from Calif by UPS ground..
Then another $31.00 for a 4th P3-600/2mb/100 ES/( only had 3 in it)
Does have 4-512mb Crucial PC100 ECC Reg in it also..
OHH, Shipping weight was 104lbs..
UPS showed at the door with 2 guys..God's Truth!:D

I PM wes with the thread for two other sive projects and then yes there is the riesel sieve in boinc and Leiden that would fly there.

Man SOB is a cpu hog.

Ok, got one installing windows now. Tripple Xeon 500mhz, 1gb Ram 6x17gb SCSI drives. We'll see how it does in SoB. That sieve project is to much work, when they come out with an automated client, i'll move to that jose.

Well while your waiting for that to install... make yourself familiar with the service install. You will need it to configure 3 clients for that bad boy, considering you have 3 Xeons. I will guestimate that you will get 500-600k cEMs/sec per client. But it will be interesting to see the actuals.
I suggest after service install sobsvc -i , use sobsvc -p:3:0 ;)

Bah, i thought windows xp recognized more than 2cpu's.. guess not. Task man and cpu-z only see 2. I'll have to look at see if I can find a server OS laying around.

XP should see at least 4, it does with the DXs. Maybe only 2 physical CPUs then. I always thought that in multiprocessor boxes they always had to be in pairs, maybe thats the problem.

XP pro can only recognize 2 cpu's max. It has no problem with multiple cores on cpu's, it has no problem with logical cpu's on Xeons etc but when it come to physical cpu's 2 is the limit. You'll need a server OS if you wan't to use Windows:cool:

Ya only with DX's. with actual CPU's. Tis funny actually that you see 31 CPU's (albeit most shaded out) in taskmanager when you even go to set CPU affinity. Could let you believe that if you had many CPU's that it would work and recognise them.

PS: James 'Time to Teabag' had decreased to 20 days last time I looked last night. Must get a headsup and see how things are going with your race to 250k in QMC. XTT might have some fun soon.

Nope, doesn't have to be installed in pairs. The previous OS that was on it (2k advanced server, saw all 3 cpu's fine). I got a server OS, so i'll install that tonight.

put it on SETI!!! lol

Actually, i'm almost being serious there. most of the hardware running seti is still ancient stuff since so few people take it seriously who buy good hardware... :)

People in the Bay Area...

On Craigslist, there's somebody selling a Dell Poweredge 6350 with 4x500MHz Xeons ($100), and he also has 2x Dell Poweredge 6450 with 2x700MHz Xeons ($300 for both). FYI, the 6450s have 4 slots for processors, so you might be able to combine the 2x 6450s into a single quad processor system. All systems have at least 1GB of RAM. For those that are interested... http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/sys/208235372.html

I'm tempted to pick it up, but not too sure if I have space for it!

Riptide,
PM me a better how to on the SOBQueue thing and i'll get that running on another machine.

Currently I go this one up and running on Leiden, its eating thru those wu. ~30min wu. I'm a kinda big fan of Bonic, just because of the fact its easy to setup and run.

This one's bench with 5.4.9 is 448/701 :p
