tried a 2GB kit of the GeIL DDR2 PC6400 C4 and hated them
the set i had were not very overclockable at all and it was a bit of a struggle to get them completely stable at anything above stock speeds (this was on the Intel Bad Axe, limited to 2.2V)

probably because theyre the same IC's... just binned tighter.

Perhaps SPD is just rewritten for lower settings to make it easy to boot on any mobo ?

yeah that's a possibility too. I've seen quite a few high performance DDR2 sticks that have a different SPD than their rated speed.
