I have a home built system... but some of my less tech-savy friends want to buy pre-made systems... what's the best to buy these days?

no such thing

-well, there might be a least worst one to buy.

At the moment I distrust HP slightly less than Gateway or Dull. Don't by a Dull for home use.

if your prefab there are only really two choices to go for.

the disputable king of prefab: Dell*

and an aftermarket part supplier. (such as your local computer store or online vendors prefab)

*for the record i love my dell.

Look at the HP A15?? line of computers. They are well made and use quality components.

Ex. A1520N, A1540N

Whats the purpose of the machines?
If gaming is a purpose, you can try to convince them to use a small reseller, maybe one of the ones HardOCP has reviewed. Otherwise I'd say Dell, their XPS line has come a long way, and I priced a system there that included many of the same parts of a NewEgg order I just placed. Dell only came out to be about $600 more.

Dell's make some very nice computers. Just stay away from their dirt cheap $300 ones taht seem too good to be true. I've had 5 Dells (3 laptops and 2 desktops) and they were all good except the cheap $300 one I got. Even on that one it wasn't a bad deal since it came with free shipping and a free 17" LCD (which would have normally costed $250.)

i have found dell to be very good, especially with RMA issues. both my PSU and a stick of RAM were replaced the day after I phoned up.

if you are not a computer enthusiast, then dells are probably the way to go.

people can knock dell all day long. They certainly arent perfect but neither is anyone other company. they are the best bang for the buck and even tho RMAs are a pain it really isnt that bad if you are good. You just gotta tell the reps what they want to hear to get what you want. If you preemtively tell them you did everything he is gonna ask you it goes quick. Tho HP isnt that bad either, but compaq has contaminated them a bit
