View Full Version : How much monthly bandwith are you using?

Hey guys, was just wondering if one or a few of you tell me an estimate of what your general use every month in GB could roughly be, my line now is about 2.4MB, and about 700's for upload speed and wanted to hear from a few of you are using, so I could maby upgrade to the right plan as they only offer plans from home residential to business service all with a bandwidth cap however I think one of the higher bandwith plans might be more than enough to run mj-12 on a fairly steady basis.

When I had my new conenction (4/1) I used an average of 10-20 gigs per day if I used the full connection 24/7.

That is, ehm... ~500GB/month

On a good month of maxing out my 2.2mb connection about 500gb could be reached. :toast:

On my 6mb(I think) Comcast told me that I used 740gb last month.

Belgium sucks... I have a 10Gig up/ 2Gig down monthly limit with a 10Mbit speed:rolleyes:

Moving over to another provider soon... found one that has unlimited up/download with 3.3Mbit capped speed :woot:

heh.. i'd really hate to see how much I used a month! I have a full DS3 at my disposal.

Comcast freaked out when I was running 4 rigs 7x24. They said I was using over 1TB / month, and either I backed off or they would poke my eyes out.:nono:

Ok thanks guys for that it really helped alot. My isp connection is really fast and I get way more down and up bandwidth than they put in the plan, I ran it for a day and chewed up 30GB. This plan only has a 60GB limit, so for now I will run mj-12 full blast x2 machines the last day of every month, wouldnt want them getting away with me not using my ammount that I pay for lol.

Turns out I was greatly mistaken about my isp's plans, they dont have one that comes close to what I would like to use then. I for the life of me can not find a fast isp with unlimited use on dsl that has service for where I live. And I dont want cable as there's a good reason for that:wasntme:

Unless your downloading constant movies, thats impossible.. I move ALOT of stuff and in a month with mj-12, i didnt even use a TB yet... and my connection is 29 times your T-1...

and btw.. those totals are from only one machine.. Multiply that by 5 for actual monthly bandwidth.

OK, thanks again for the estimates really appreciate it. I am going to go looking a little more for some better service I mean I'm right in the middle of a big city there has to be somthing decent. This is kind of a fun project, I was having a blast with it for that one day and would like to run it a bit aswell, seemed to me like it ran just fine along wcg so what the hell.

Well.... I remember been capable of 222KB/second on a 2Mbit down line (88% capcity of advertised). I was able to rape my way through my 20Gig cap in a weekend with Majestic 12 on and off.

So on my 2Mbit down thats 222KByte
So 222kBytes/1024 x 60 x 60 x 24 x 30 = 562,464 MBytes per month. or (divide by 1024) 549.281 Gigabytes per month.

Now to the gent that takes down 1T a week ;) , 1T a week is 1024 Gigabytes per week... so that is 4.33 weeks per month therfore 4433.92 GB per month. So 7.88 time the sped of 2MB at full blast/usage?

Are my sums correct!

EDIT: According to answers.com T1 is only 1.5Mbits/sec.

Hmmm whats that smell in here! I think its the smell of xtreme BS!

You are pretty close on your numbers riptide, I think the order is for T1 is right around where you said, T1 then E1, cable, T2, but I do belive that a T1 could maby strech into cable starting around 4Mbps.

I am on dsl and getting a good solid 2.5 down, and sometimes 700 up (mj-12) only it seems. which puts me into a standard of whatever the hell E1 is or starts at lol.

How about that T4 I found on the net 274Mbps:eek: I would think you would have to be sitting on top of the isp and in the right location, man that would be smokin.

Edit:Lamfear, we would be glad to have you, you can head to mj-12 home page via google and sign up there, and join xtreme systems on the join a team section on that site, or shoot Haltech a pm he's the leader of mj-12 or ask here in the mj-12 section and I'm sure someone will be along to help you. Also if your into donating your spare cpu cycles to find cures for diseases, check out our wcg project section or any of the others in the forums, we could use all the help we can get in any of these projects, mj-12,QMC, Wcg, Sob,ect..

Riptide is pretty close. T1/E1 = 1.544Mb/s. I am on a DS3/T3/E3 = 44.7Mb/s

*note: European versions are alittle higher as they get 32channels vs. the US's 24channels.

If you really want to see how much you use it, download dumeter (www.dumeter.com). I've had it running since last night so we'll see ;)

Oh man,
We have a cap of 15GB here. I always thought that this would be way too low for even the most basic users, but providers here in crappy Belgium don't seem to care. They even list 15GB a month as a "premium" service and charge about as much for a 'lite' version of max. 400MB/month...

I hate this country !

4 GB in 22 hours  Glad you are not one of the other subscribers contending my service. :)

We have 50 GB limit per MONTH on the primium ($70) service!

Seriously, how do you get to this number? My guess, is that a lot of this is unsolicited internet traffic (attacks) that are counted towards your traffic.

Yep. i use DUmeter all the time. Wes i thought you had dialup? Is that dialup meterage on DU? I was saying somewhere else WES that if you had dialup and was guilty about not been able to using machines cos of download restriction you could run DPAD on your unconnected machines. ;) Only one download needed then copy the install across diff machines and upload from one machine everyso often when you need to report results.

zombie thread revival!! :rotf:

I'm currently doing roughly 500-600 gigs per day, about 15TB/month(not sure how much non-MJ12 stuff adds to that).

o/t:

whatever happened to Haltech (http://www.majestic12.co.uk/projects/dsearch/userinfo.php?id=1007)? He was a BEAST in the very early stages(8mil per day in 2006!). It looks like he hasn't crawled since 2006 and hasn't been on XS forum since June 2010. I was wondering what you all think about updating the leader for our XS team (http://www.majestic12.co.uk/projects/dsearch/teaminfo.php?id=60) on the MJ12 stats board(Movieman 2011!) but it probably requires Haltech to make the change

OldChap

My isp decided I was being unreasonable ......I just say they calculated the contention ratios wrong but running MJ 12 http://www.majestic12.co.uk/projects/dsearch/teaminfo.php?id=60 I hit 7TB for a couple of months in a row on a 50/1.75 connection.

It was the 1.75 that was the limiting factor too. Now it must be around 3TB. I don't have an actual cap but am limited to around 8GB during the 9am to 9pm day

Great revival...Is this the oldest thread ever revived???

I'd say just about all of that is MJ use Deadly

2006 seems so long ago looking back :D

Are you still using pfSense for routing OC? I saw someone mention on MJ12 forum it might be possible to run dual-WAN on pfsense but I'm not sure how the node will deal with separating downloads from uploads on 2 different IP addresses. I've seen people buy 2 FIOS connections and bond them together(2 [50/20mb] connections bonded to form 1 [100/40mb] connection) but I don't know if it would be cost effective for you. If you could downgrade your connection and order 2 lower speed plans and bond them together so they add up to 50mb, but with higher overall upload speed. Then again I don't know if the ISP will complain anyway

It has been suggested (on Pfsense forum) that I should be able to achieve the wan routing using firewall rules....and once I have re-arranged the layout and added Nic's (and for that matter reached a certain goal) I will play some with it to see what is possible. I will maintain the current router between pfsense and the slower connection as I think that will offer the ability to run that connection during the day too as well as having a fall back connection if the main goes down.
