Good compaq cruncher @ compusa :).

* 512MB DDR Memory
* 120GB Serial ATA hard drive
* DVD/CDRW Combo Drive
* GeForce 6150LE Onboard Video Card (1 PCIe Slot Available)
* Windows XP Home Edition

$179.99 After Rebates

Very upgradeable too. This could be turned into a monster gaming rig by just adding a video card (7600GT? :p)

how many of these threads do we need?! *rolls eyes*
haven't we already established the best bang-for-your-buck crunchers? namely,
AM2 3800 x2
cheap mobo
512 stick of ram (or 2)
FSP 300watt supply
USB thumb drive

depending on your choices, it'll come out to be 300-350 dollars.

we had a C2D idea down too, but i forgot what it was. probably like an e6300 and DS3 and all the other needed components. more expensive than the 3800 x2 solution, but more powerful in an almost equal ratio.

When the E4300 comes out, that'll be a good cruncher cpu.

Is that the 'Celeron' of the C2D line?

I guess.. but it's still dual core. Only difference is a higher multi and 800MHz FSB vs lower multi and 1066MHz FSB.

Good if you have some cheap boards that don't go high on the fsb :D

$360 Dell AMD 3800X2 cruncher / $280 Dell AMD Sempron 3400+ cruncher:

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=555&l=en&oc=MLB1801&s=biz

Subtract just about everything from it, like the monitor and modem. The one thing I would add is the XP re-installation CD. For $10 (even though it should be included IMO), it would be useful to have and use for another machine later.

Really hard to beat those prices considering it will come with an OS, a shoddy MB, but a decent HDD, optical, and proc. The $360 X2 isn't bad especially being dual core...

Bloody... a thumb drive here new will cost as much as a 20-40 gig HD IDE second hand. So just buy a stack of them at a clearance sale somewhere and I'd say that'd beat a thumb. Never know, someone might want to run a few VM's down the line and a thumb ain't gonna do that.

Martijn... you ever heard of komplett? (Actually their warehouses are based in NL ;) ) Check your local page for them... mine is www.komplett.ie. ... your is probably www.komplett.nl .... there are some very nice upgrade/bundle deals at the moment. Good supplier all round. Especially for us Europeans.

Yes, I've heard of that shop, although I've never bought anything there. I'll have a look.

Komplett is a great etailor and I highly recommend them! Great prices and quick and good shipping, could do with stocking more items though :p:
