Sounds like a few good ol UPS's good for a good 30 min each min run time are something to put up on the shopping list. For me on a tighter budget I would rather buy somthing that boosts my wcg or dc project mark but that ups could save it all one day.

I have 3 UPS's.. in the last 2 days the electrical system in this house has begun to fall apart.

two complete circuits quite working, several circuits "brown out" when you run more than one thing on them, and the upstairs stove's bottom element arced BIGTIME!

When the element was removed the circuit attached to the stove quit working (about 4 plugs).

Time to call an electrician..

recently i've been looking into buying a UPS, last night as the remnants of a hurricane went past, the power must've gone out/came back on 20-30 times last night, was really annoying my printer kept doing the self check thing every time and would wake me up (ended up turning off power strip) and it messed up the central air for a while, the compressor would run without the evap fan and the evap would turn into a block of ice

What kind of rig is it???

An average DC AMD will cost about $8/9 a month @ .08 per Kw. your power rate might be higher but, $67 for one rig means something is wrong.
I run 38 boxes for about $300 a month.

I livei n Ca and will tell you, 38 rigs would cost me about $5000 a month to run...

7 rigs costs me $488 a month...

I haven't lived on the coast since 77, it was cheaper then, PG&E, I think back then.

WOW what a bill, I think I figured it out, I don't know. It was much more simple when I was there.

I realize, NOW, how fortunate I am to have cheap electricity and am able to fund this many crunchers.

It dawns on me that this is something the DC adminstrators should consider when awarding points....It cost you way more to make 1K in points than I or maybe many others......rewards should reflect the cost of the donation of time and expense.

This something I had not fully considered before.

I am glad that I have found this out.

It adds an entirely different complexion to entire crunching community, for me.

My hats off to those who spend far more for utilities than I to make a contribution to DC in general and to support the DC teams, where ever they might be.

It should cool off now, I live south of you and it is becoming comfortable here, especially at night.

I have considered setting up some more "winter" crunchers as my FAN portion of the electric bill will fund electricty for more boxes.

I didn't use but 10gal heating oil last year and probalby won't use any this year.

I'm running more than 7. I'm also paying more than that much. My last bill was 5something. This month will probably be the worse.

You guys are "lucky." With 3 desktops 24/7 (1 DC, others SC), and 2 laptops, our electric bill was $715. I do also have a fishtank and had the A/C running inconsistently, but that was quite a hit. This is with 3 people living in a 2200 sq. ft. house... Needless to say, crunching went down, and not all my rigs are 24/7 now. The highest rate at 300% over baseline is 34 cents/KWh. Not cheap....

I have 9 rigs total here. Don't have to pay anything since my folks agree with the DC project and are involved in it. Maybe you could get them interested and then they could grant you some more rigs for the project?

Since the resource is given to a not-for-profit org, has anyone tried to write-off their energy-bill increase? Seems like we could as long as documentation is up to par.

I'm not sure about how that would work, I mean here you give an old junker to the kidney foundation and get to write that off as 50 dollars @tax time, but I think (from thier view(govt.)+ power company) it would become hard to show exact ammounts of energy being consumed by the dc project and would prob say somthing along the lines of well you could be running somthing else like pot growing lamps ect.. You raise a very good point and idea if it could be done that would sure help alot of you guys with big hydro bills, even little guys like me would notice the kick back at the end of the year, good thought rob.

Well, since the stats are being accumulated, if you kept good logs and could correlate energy draw, you might be able to make a pretty solid case. I'll talk to a cpa and report back.

Man all your bills are crazy. Well my Dad who lives on his own in a 3 bedroom house has offered to house whatever PC's i want. So if my farm ever gets big... it'll be 'Hello Dadums, look what Rippy brought for you'.
Has anyone toyed with the idea of using a small-medium diesel/petrol powered generator? If you knew you could get it for free/cheap might be worth the while. Now i ain't ever done generators, but i wonder how much an hour would one cost to run full trottle? Anyone?
