Has anyone put wcg on Linux or BSD to see if it is "better" or not?
My G5 iMac is a little slower than what my Opty 144 was but the opty had 2gig or ram in it V the mac's 1gig.
The reason I ask is I got the AMD box running thanks to Mike and it is capable of running XP64 (which it is) or I have Suse 10 on the other side.
Just wondering. Happy Crunching on the Grid

I'm not too sure about that with the Q system I would think you might do a little better on claimed credit with boinc and linux 64 bit, though any way you look at it you still need to hit a good result with 2 others. So I would also like to know for sure to about linux 64, I havnt run it since rosie burned us.

You need 64bit linux client, yes it is way better than on win :)

like 10% or 50% or what? And what ver of 64 *inx are you running?
Any special tweeks to make it better?
The Suse 10 I have does not have 64bit so I am going to need a new one I guess.

nope, because wcg wont run on linux-x86_64. Sad but true.

Do you mean Boinc doesn't, or just WCG?

boinc does run on x86_64. It runs really good/fast to be exact. I am working at an solution to get wcg running, expect something in 2-5 days :)

edit:
Ok, actually you can get wcg to work when you download the normal Boinc binarys they provide on their site, but i smell more points using a 64bit self compiled boinc. will be playing around to find a way ;)

so myself or someone can download them for you and ship a dvd or cd.
you can even order CD's on distrowatch. they are only like 2 or 3 dollars.

I could send you a copy of mine...SUSE 10.1 (64-bit ). I hosed my main system, both Linux AND Windows, with it. But that was probably user error, I imagine. Still, I haven't gone back and tried it again. :)

I am running WCG / BOINC under 64Bit windows...Don't know if it helps cause I don't understand the point system. Here's a screeny...the unit ending with "b5" is my AMD64

Looking at the run time and points scored it seems to be your highest scoring rig - whats the spec?

I am up and running 64XP windowz but have not run 32bit on it to be able to tell you.
@Brot if you get a tarball of it optimized LMK and I will give it a run on mine and check for bugs. I talked to a friend @ work who will download a 86_64 dvd for me :)

I have tried on linux and it runs just fine :)

Here are benchmarks

6400 @ 3.4Ghz

Win
6.1K/28K

FC5 64bit
8.2K/31K

Better benchmark, more WCG points :)

Ofcourse core 2 duo, win32 :)

It won't help much running 32bit boinc under win64. I wanted to compile my own 64bit windows version of BOINC under win64 to see if there is any difference but haven't done it yet. I believe results would be similar, so when Vista comes there will be 64bit boinc client :)

More than happy to Beta test it when you do :toast:

@ kiwi:

Did you use a special 64 bit linux version of boinc or the normal version provided on their website?
normally 64-bit versions of boinc wont get work with the wcg servers, i talked to one of the wcg forums.
