Im wondering the same. I don't think its a regular ide cable tho...

I dont see why these new products come out, aimed toward gamers etc, and still have flat cables..

Hi Aftermath,
If you don`t mind doing alittle modding, you can make your flat cable round. Just take a razerblade and split/cut your ribbin cable wires apart. Separating 2 wire leangths at a time from connector to connector. Be very, very careful if you do this.
Go real slow and take your time. When you are done... Bunch your wires together and wrap... Viola !!! You now have a round cable.
Then tuck wire(cable) out of the way
Always worked well for me... Good Luck... Cruzzco

What up, Cruzzco

Might have to try that mod since doesnt seem to be a cable smaller than the flat one it comes with it I have it hidden now so is not much of problem.:woot:

I think the reason they keep it flat is to keep crosstalk to a minimum. Keep the wires physically separate and you get the best quality signal.

I think you are right about that, there might even be a non-used cable inbetween every signalling cable to make sure that there won't be any crosstalk, they do this with hard drive cables as far as I know otherwise they could have never reached ATA-133.

Yep, there's a ground in between the signal wires. And in IDE the consequences are more manageable -- a little data corruption is no biggie because error correction catches the mistake and forces a resend. You just get a marginally slower transfer rate. With analog audio signals crosstalk can seriously degrade sound quality.

The weird thing with the X-Fi cable is that it carries all the signals from the card to the bay, not just audio. Not sure what effect, if any, that has. Hmm.

I wouldnt suggest doing the cable mod for the reasons stated above when you have power going through a wire and its overlaped onto a signal wire you'll have a distortion increase and sometimes its very noticeable.

Here's what someone successfully did over at NV News Forums.

You can use a round IDE cable. I used this one, 36 inch single device molded.

a little pricey, but nice quality. If you notice the picture of the connector,
one pin hole is closed, I used a small micro screwdriver to punch a hole as it is needed. Works great everything is functional. (See Thumbnails)
