for the first time. i know i'm such a n00b, but before i was worried about frying my proc, etc. etc. so i tried it with the OC guru software that Abit offers. i finally tried it in BIOS and i'm happy to say that it's stable. Abit's EQ software reports that the CPU is running at 46 deg. C idle and 53 at load.

here's the current setup:
Abit AS8 (865PE-ICH5)
Thermaltake Silent775 HSF with 90mm funneled fan
2x512mb Corsair XMS 2-3-3-6
Intel 550 3.4HT
eVGA Nvidia 6800 128mb AGP @398/790mhz
74gb WD Raptor (OS/Apps)
160gb Seagate IDE
200gb Maxtor IDE
Lite-On DVD-RW

here's what i did to overclock it:
230FSB
Vcore 1.4125 (only registers as 1.384 on CPU-Z)
5:4 ram divider
set latencies to 2.5-3-3-7
ram runs @ 184

please make some suggestions as to what i should do next now that i've got this thing running at 3.9. should i shoot for higher or mess with the ram? is this a decent overclock considering my setup?

good job man, you gotta start somewhere :):woot:

what advice do you want? I would say just keep going with the OC you seem to be doing well :)

are these decent results? i figure since the E6300 is on the way, if i screw this rig up it won't matter in a few days.

If you shoot for higher FSB, you'll get closer to getting your ram back up to 200 mhz, which would be nice

Not a bad sPi time for a NetBurst. Keep clockin man!

most definately, that SPi time is in normal mode, not safe mode.

i brought it up to 236x17 so i could break the 4ghz barrier. anyone have any other suggestions?

i reccomend setting a fairly high vcore, like 1.45ish, and using systool to automatically clock as high as it can. It will set the fsb up one, then do a pi run (i like 512K, its pretty quick) if its fine itll keep going. Once it finds an error (if it doesnt crash) set the fsb down a few and try a 1M Spi run.

I was going to suggest something similar. If for any reason you bsod or reboot in games up the Vcore a tad. It's best to stay around 1:1 or 4:5 with memory for example:
5:4 @ 300 FSB = 5/300 = 60*4 = 240*2 = Dram frequency of 480 PC3200
(1.25)
OR
1:1 @ 300 FSB = 1/400 = 300*1 = 300*2 = Dram frequency of 600 down clocks to PC4800
(1)
OR
4:5 @ 300 FSB = 4/300 = 75*5 = 375*2 = Dram frequency of 750 down clocks to PC5300
(.8)
OR
3:4 @ 300 FSB = 3/300 = 100*4 = 400*2 = Dram frequency of 800 PC6400

ok guys i need your help. i've got my processor running at 235x17 @ 1.4375vCore. the proc runs around 48-50 idle and 55-57 on a load. i can run superpi 8M and 16M on it fine, but as soon as i try to play CS:Source it'll play awesome for a while (15mins) then it'll show this and stop the game of course. i can go right back into the game and play some more, what's wrong with the rig? (when it shows this, it's around 55-57deg)

Either your RAM is clocked too high, timings are too tight, or your CPU needs a bit more oomph voltage wise. Could also be temps, or PSU.

well yeah i wanted to straighten that out. i mean my temps are at like 57-58 load max, my RAM is clocked at 188 (5:4 divider) and the timings are 2-3-3-6, the rated timings for the ram. do you think the CPU needs more than 1.385volts to run at 4ghz?

Yeah, most likely. :) Try 1.40v or somethin.

my board suffers from droop, but i can get it around 1.4 steady by setting it to 1.46 in bios. however, i notice no changes whatsoever when i byno the voltage up, my ram is running underclocked at default timings and i've got 2.65V going to the ram. what other things would you guys suggest?

my 550 is stable @4ghz with 1.48 v try it on yours , max voltage according to intel is 1.55 so you've got some room. also my abit needs the pci express freq. locked at 110 to stay stable over 235 and maxes out at 245 no matter what i tried.

I'd try playing with prime orthos to ensure stablilty and find maximum temps :)

I remember the old days. 2004, with a P4 540 @ 247 x 16 limited by the mobo. Happy times :)

Try more volt's on cpu, nb. But Your temp's is not good for oc - too high.

This is my Prescott 541 on fu... mobo :stick: P5LD2-SE

Preety stable ~4.6GHz ;)

It appears that you need:
-to go 1:1 on the ram
-increase your Vcore 1.4500V or higher

Or
-reduce your multi to 15
-increase your FSB
-allowing you to keep your voltage around 1.4525V
