If no one has posted info to help you decide which Raptors to get for RAID0, here you go, get the 74's (300gig's to big anyway).

WD740ADFD vs. WD1500ADFD
Both RAID0 on ASUS A8N32-SLI (74's with Opteron 148 at 2.75, 150's with Opteron 170 at 2.7)

Seems like the 74's are the better raid combo . Although alot of people are now claiming that the new seagate 320gb 7900.10's are just as fast as raptors but i have yet to see any proof.

Yeah, I wish I would have waited for the 74's. Built the 74's in RAID0 for a friend who could not stand that I was smoking him into every server. I have the Seagate 7200.10 320gig as my backup drive, it is fast but I do not see two of those touching two Raptors, no way. My brother has 4 80gig SATA II drives in RAID0, and he is fast, even gets into servers before me sometimes (sometimes key word), but with his slow access times my system is much more responsive and "snappy" compared to his. I think it just comes down to how much your are willing to spend to get the absolute very best.

My original plan is two of the new 74gb raptors and I'm thinking of sticking with it I wish WD would drop a perpindicular raptor lol I'm sure they will in the future but I'll have bought mine before then. I ordered a single 320 seagate for a friends build he's not into heavy perforamnce so its not a big issue but to me I'm heavy and need somthin to last few years I havent upgraded this rig in 5 years .....

If you want the best you are going to be upgrading every 2 years I'm afraid. I feel the same way, every time I buy something there is something just a little bit better that comes out. I would go with two 74's and that should hold you at least two years (then when you upgrade later you can split them up and put them in systems that you sale to your friends:) I am thinking about a SATA RAID card and maybe some Raptor 74's (but Raptor 150's make expensive backup drives!!). I would probably keep my Raptor X just for the looks, and then sale the plain 150 (without the pretty window, how vain).

I might need to put glasses, but, isn't the test showing the 150s are faster in everything but seek times?
And CPU utilization??? Same test on 4 raptors on nvRaid on A8N32 shows 0% CPU utilization for me. I'll give some numbers when I'm back from vacation.

From the pictures the 150's are only faster in linear read middle and random read. Overall the 74's are better . Considering i'll save close to 200$ from 74 to a 150 raid its a better option for me personally I just use the raptors for the OS and my games I'll have a big drive for storage.

I still like the 150's I can install alot of apps on 300 GB :)

Always best to keep at least 30% of your drives free for best performance. That does not leave much space on 2 74's.... They both look like fast setups to me, larger drives of the same technology are almost ALWAYS a bit slower.

Then you also have to be concerned with power usage etc when installing large numbers of drives, I gaurantee 4 raptor 74's take quite a bit more power than 2 150's.

So I guess in the end there are no suprises found here. I usualy go with the larger drives myself. Personaly a single 150 is a nice quick drive and takes up less space and power than 2 74's although it may no tbe as fast. I would imagine a single 150gb raptor would have a much better seek time than 2 74's.

But this is a good apples to apples comparison Thanks!

I'm thinking of adding a 3rd 74G raptor to my next RAID0 setup. Price is cheap now.

Overall = seek?
What in that picture shows bonus with 74s vs 150s except Read? Duh.

On another note, I wonder why his CPU is getting utilized:

do hard drives even have anything to do with in game load? I know loading the actual game from windows it does but once its started does it matter? I have a special edition western digital regualr old ata100, nothing special with a xp 2800+ and I am actually the first in every single counter strike room that I play in. Sometimes by up to 2-4 seconds...its weird i know

The 150Gig raptor I remeber them doing a test with Raid drives and the 150Gig by itself and it usually came on top plus less heat in the system and quiter.

Ouch, I just figured why Everest isn't showing CPU utilization on my PC - I nLited XP and removed Performance Logs/Alerts, so it doesn't detect CPU utilization. Funny :(
With 4 raptors, defragging this thing rapes one core :(

Okay so how about this, possible flaws and objections welcome.

1 Boot drive Raptor 36GB
2X Game Drives 74GB Raid 0 for games.
1 Storage Drive Raptor 150GB

and of course this brings another question, Sata controller card, as the Ultra-D only has 4 SATA slots, and I would have 6 SATA devices, so, would reliance for all 6 devices on a 3rd party card be performance wise be advisable?

don't meant to pirate thread, but as performance is being discussed.

Raptor for storage? Nope. For simple storage get some high capacity drive instead.
The controllers have two edges. They will eliminate CPU utilization, but will also be limited by the bus. It need not be the PCI bus, the PCI-e bus also has limits, and it's shared by multiple devices, therefore, you won't get full PCI-e x8 link in x8 slot if all slots are filled. You should consult technical documents about your motherboard and see what hub controls which ports, and whether putting a RAID card is useful.
Be VERY considerate which card you pick for Raptors, especially if you get 16MB cache 74G or 150G drives, as some cards (promise - GRRRRR) won't recognize them always, and the drives will perform slower. nvRaid gets much higher performance for me than EX8350 for example; not just 20% or such, but rather 5 times or more.
