If I were to remove the stock fan on my ASUS X1900XT and replaces the stock thermal compound with as5, would this give it any cooling improvement?
If I were to do this, would y'all mind me posting up a few pics and a small step-by-step for the users that can't (don't feel like) readily buy(ing) a newer cooler?

edit: this seems like the wrong thread, sorry. can it get moved to one thread up (ie Xtreme mods)?

Take the screws off the back, clean GPU and heatsink with rubbing alcohol (LEAVE THE RAM PADS IN PLACE) Put AS5 on GPU, screw cooler back on. Simple stuff and it drops temps 5c or so.

Yes,

Often times the stock thermal compounds -- or factory mounting process, doesn't make very good contact with the heat surfaces.

Alright then... I'll probably do this on Friday. I'll post some pics as well.

I did that to my stock cooler, and actually I ended up lapping mine because it had aweful deep grooves in it. Temps did improve a little too.

I'm considering getting a vf900 though at some point.

My advice is to buy the VF900 CU, it REALLY makes the diference, both in sound and temps, thrust me, you won´t be dissapointed ;)

i got a 7900GTX, should i do this too? will the VF900 fit on a 7900GTX, hard to believe that a cooler the size of mine would not cool well enough

I'm pretty sure if will fit. I have the VF700CU on my 7800gt, and it is worth it. It is silent, and super effective! Go for it!
