I am hoping to fit up to 8 disks in my new case (probably start with 4 and expand to 8) using hot-swap trays (5 in 3x5.25 and 3 in 2x 5.25). To fit all this in the case, I would need to mount my pump (Iwaki MD-20RZT) with the motor end just below the 5 drive tray about ~1 inch.

Anyone with experience know if the magnetic field from this pump is at any time strong enough to cause trouble for the disks in this scenario? I am hoping not but I really don't know and I do not have the tools to test it myself.

Thanks,

You cant cause errors in drives even rubbing aginst them with "strong earth magnets" which emit a mangnetic field far more powerful than a pump.

Vibration from the pump on the other hand could be an issue, especially if youre drives dont have any decoupling.

Thanks for the quick reply. As for the vibration; I am either going to use grommets+damping material under each foot of the pump, or get a 2'x1'x1/2" sheet of plastic and mount it on vibration absorbing sheet/tape/gel to save the bottom of my case any drilling.

O_o

MD20RZ and 8 drives, I'd like to see how you can fit that! I'd be more worried about the heat dump of the pump, not the magnetic field.

What case are you using?

Using a YY-0430 (http://www.yeongyang.com/yy-0420-0430.htm). Considered one of the Mountain Mods cases, but prefered steel over aluminum; also cheaper. The case weighs 40lbs empty too  - planning to mount some nice handles but not sure how I can distribute that load well.

I am planning to have a 120mm fan aimed directly at the back side of the pump - under the drives - and venting out the back.

What does one of those cases run?

the case rather lacks ventilation
120 intake/90 exhaust

definitely lacking somewhere...
