hi there,

I am using a 2gb ZX kit on my P5W-DH.. The kit don't like most cpu/ram ratio, and it become somtime hell to make my 6600es burnt.

Is there any users of this duo ? Feedback ? :fact:

doesnt mix and match well, above 370fsb i have to run it at SPD (which goes to 5-6-6-18) no matter how high the vdimm. At lower FSB's (e.g. 300mhz) i can run it up to and past 900mhz 4-4-4-12 with 2.2v. So something is amiss, i reckon it's the RAMs fault.

EDIT

btw, is your name Dune related?

same thing here. What about low speeds ?

A bit tweaked, but it is ;) Old fan of books, movies, and dune 2 on amiga 500 :woot: Got this nick for years ( +/- 10).

Low speeds? Haven't tried tightening timings at 800mhz or lowering voltages, tbh. But even if i run it at like 600mhz with 370fsb i have to run SPD, it's like mhz don't matter any more.

I'm waiting for a BIOS to hopefully sort this out, but it could just be the RAM is weak. It isn't top of the line, after all. I don't know anyone else with this RAM, so i don't know how it performs on other boards e.g. BadAxe or DS3. Would be interesting to hear from anybody with any results?

I thought it might have been a french translation or something, lol. I'm just reading Children Of Dune currently, having read the first two + several prequel 'books'. Great series.

These kits are supposed to be stepped just before top of the line in pc6400 chips (NR>NS>ZX>HZ)... very strange behaviour. Not too much efficient on clocking, right, but it should work at stock speeds or below even with high fsb. Anyway, no chance to get results from gigabyte boards, gskill kits are still unsupported on DS3/DS4/DQ6 mb

Please somebody with 965/975 board and ZX kit in da place ?

I used a P5W with Gskill 6400 ZX ram. Weird combo, i had Large FFT errors at stock and problems all over, couldn't get any good overclock out of it.

Moving to a differnet board...

There's a big difference with the HZ.

You shouldn't switch board, switch ram.

Yeah, i figured that. I know it has the same timings and all, but i suspect G.Skill had to seriously loosen the internal timings to achieve the 4-4-4-12, hence why it won't work at high FSB.

i'm using same setup: p5w+e6600+zx... it runs fine at 800mhz with 400fsb.. set at 2.0v @ 4 4 4 12... 504 bios.. maybe you guys got lemons?

I'm not switching ram, the GOOD 2gb kits of ram are expensive, and i don't care for memory overclocking. Better to save money so i can have 4gb later ;)

The motherboard on the other hand was a constant source of confusion and frustration that ultimately died and was RMAd to newegg.

Newegg didn't have any more and refunded my money, now the board's OOS and overpriced overwhere, screw it. Too many people are having problems with it.

*lemons means we got bad boards, which i did.

there isnt anything wrong with the ZX wrong that stuff will crank up to nearly 1000 mhz 4-4-4-x on an e-prem board w/ 2.2v i believe or maybe it was 2.4v

the ZX stuff is just fine.

and it had better be my kit will be here monday!
so ill report back how it acts on a DS3

Please do Lestat, alot of people are asking about G.SKILL HZ/ZX and the DS3/DS4 and DQ6 motherboards...alot of confusion it seems.

Running the ZX on a P5W DH, was getting all kinds of errors. Orthos/SP wouldn't run for more than 5 seconds, etc..

Disabled hyperpath in Bios, all is well now. Just a thought for anyone having screwy problems with it.

Strangely the G.SKILL website has your memory + motherboard on the QVL list?

with all honesty fellas, i have never owned a kit of ram that wouldnt work on a baord.
i know i saw some people reporting that certain gskill kits werent working on the AM2 systems but as much as i believe them i find that so hard to believe.

for me all i will do is go into the bios and set the ram voltage to 2.1v and set the spd to 5-5-5 this is very loose and will allow just about any ram made by anyone to boot up.

i've seen certain boards/chipset that didnt "like" certain types of ram from various mfg's but never one that just flat out wouldnt work.

now i realise thats just me and what hardware i have had over the years. but ram is ram, to the best of my knowledge, and my knowledge is still limited with DDR II, AMD vs Intel there isnt any deciding factory among the 2 or the two different chipsets that can make or break whether a ram actually works.

it more or less comes down to the SPD timings set from the factory, that could be stopping the ram from booting. If the bios is left to auto it may simply be reading it wrong and applying the wrong timings.

now this is could bring into the picture some bad issues if you messed up an overclock and had to reset the bios. as this would set everything back to defaults. but i wont be getting rid of my current set of ram(i like to have backup hardware). so. worse case i throw in 1 stick of the black label samsung and change the spd timings to the gskill preferred timings.

there's an idea!

I've always used 2.2v at least, maybe that's a bit much for it. I'll head down to 2v and see if that helps. Thanks for that tip.

That said, it's quite possible i have a lemon of a board, i'm reluctant to claim it to be the RAM. G.Skill has never failed me, Asus has.

Same here. Reckon it means anything (e.g. we got ripped..)?
I know a lot of companies do give weaker timings for SPD, so it will boot up with low volts and can be set manually. It is probably that, tbh.

and tbh, i missunderstand why, using SPD setting in bios, the real timings applied will be 5-6-6-18 on the p5w ..

My results with ZX PC-6400 and P5W DH,

380 MHz 3-4-4-10 2.2v
430 MHz 4-4-4-12 2.2v
470 MHz 5-5-5-15 2.2v
All memtest OK
Still playing with this, it's my first set of DDR2.

my ZX kit will be here in a few hours.
so i will be testing it with the hardware in my sig.

guys also remember that the P5W DH has some serious issues, above 370-ish for alot of people, this is not based off ram issues either this is the board's problem.
now granted me with my generic samsung 667 ram i hit 400mhz and hit a wall.
but still .

i iwll be tesitng it on a DS3 a board alot of people are reporting hates the gskill memory so.

i am hoping for some good results as my board has shown to be a damn solid board.
i can do 400mhz fSB with auto on all voltages xcept vdimm = +.03 and vcore which is 1.3375
but 400mhz on my chipset with auto voltages for vmch, front side bus and pci-e thats damn good in my eyes.

I have a similar setup to several of you - this was my first build.

I'm also totally new to overclocking, but put this rig together with that in mind. I've been reading up on oc'ing, but am not clear how it all relates to the P5W BIOS options. Anyone willing to provide a very basic set of guidelines?

BTW, thx to XS members for all the info that went into putting this rig together!
