"WE WERE right about AMD's Dresden and New York AMD fabs and the claim they can and will produce the GPUs. You can read the original part here.

The first fabs can produce the GPUs now and second will be able to produce graphic chips once they build it."

That defently puts ATI ahead of Nvidia... 65nm chips anybody?

That fab is FABULOUS!

Correction,

That is FABulous. :p: :D

it says the dresden fab may start producing less complicated GPUs before the end of the year.
But why? Wouldnt AMD be better of using this capacity for CPUs instead?

Only the Inq is saying this right now ppl...

Yeah. Im sure they would probably do some sort of GPU's in thier fabs

They can't fight a price war with intel, so why not use the capacity for products that make money?

That way for every core 2 duo system sold on the high end both intel and amd (through ati) make money, and on the low end intel sells pentium d's at cost or possibly for a loss (to clear inventory) and amd can still make money selling graphics chips.

It would make sense for amd to focus on clearing their inventory of surplus cpu's now, use rev.g to get the 65nm process down right and only try to grow cpu sales once k8l is ready.

any Gpu's made now would likely be 90nm parts - but you would imagine at least from a cost perspective, as tsmc wouldn't be taking a cut, a 90nm part made in dresden would cost the same as a 80nm part from tsmc.

forget 65nm even. At 90nm ATi will get a 10-20% speed improvement with minimal improvements in design. Just because they have far superior control over manufacture and are working far closer with the Fabs.
Minus it being for the Inq. it is news

im stil sticking with that they wont make GPus there for a while.

with quad core coming etc they will need that capacity incase an OEM wants AMD.

As I mentioned, one day it will make sense to put a GPU and CPU on the same die. In that case, of course, they would have to be manufactured on the same process.

Doesn't sound like it is going to happen soon if it does.

TSMC have said that ATI will stay fabless (they will be praying this is true :p).

i said to perk amd doesnt have the capacity to make ati gpu why they are retooling 1 fab the other one is getting ready for 65nm and they need to sell cpus a lot of them and make even more they sell every cpu they make now dell is going to sell servers from amd so they need more cpus....

ati wont use amd fabs in the near future...

how many 4 and 8 way servers do you think dell sell? 2s systems will be woodcrest based, followed by cloverton, which will compete with 4s amd systems. The 4 + 8 way systems account for a tiny ammount of total sales, so unless amd can beat intel on value for money, I see no reason why most people would go amd over intel.

1) better performance
2) better Performance
3) Woodcrest is currently not very well liked by the Server market yet
4) Better performance

mmmm the company were my mom works is changing to dell so you can say about 60k new desktops in 2 years and like 15k laptops in the same time and like 20 monster serves in the 3 years dell sells a lot of pc every year and lots of server too

Woodcrest offers far better performance in the 2s market.

4s and 8s counts for say 5-10% of server sales, which itself counts for under 15% of total processor sales. The increased sales dell provides amd is not that great.

Once cloverton is out, going amd in the 4s space is also challenged, leaving the incredible niche 8s space.
