I'm getting really tired of my old hard drive so I'm thinking of getting a new wd 10k drive. I plan on using it for OS and some various apps, games, etc. I have a different drive that I use for storage. I know I won't need more than 36gb.

So should I get a 36gb or a 74gb? Which one is faster or quieter? Also, are the 36gb'ers updated to the latest ADFD revision that the 150GB is, and that the 74gb is finally being updated too?

Both the 36 and 74 have ADFD versions -- 16MB cache...

The 36 (WD360ADFD) runs at about $110 and the 74 (WD740ADFD) is about $170...

get a 74gb raptor ADFD now...
and in a few months buy him some company for a nice raid 0 setup...
note that they are even cheaper than the older models
and depending on the raid setup can offer very good performance...

here are my 2x74 ADFD's Raid0 on the ICH7R

(don't pay attention to the burst speed though
as it just went crazy after enabling the cache writes...)

Aside from RAID0 being nearly useless, the 74gb is a little quicker than the 36gb model. With that said, I run Windows and all my drivers off my 36, and games and apps off of the 74. It makes more sense that way anyway, space wise. My page file also resides on the 36 with the OS. This is faster when you are running a game off the 74 so a seperate drive is doing the work of the PF. That is, when I actually use it, 2gb of RAM really cuts down the need for it.

I have some 120gb SATA NCQ Barracudas for storage.

the old 74 was "a little" quicker than the 36 one...
the 74 FLC0 was even better
the new 74 adfd is much quicker...
in some cases its too close to the 150gb model...

(i've had all of them in single and raid setups
in various controllers, on board and standalone)

as for the value of RAID0 and pagefile (regardless available ram...)
i'll not answer in this thread as it would be rather off-topic...
but maybe you should reconsider...
