It's funny how there are so little Windows machines at the top ranking, the one that are there are all windows 2000.

Does this use any CPU power or bandwidth?

if it ran on smoothwall i'd toss it on my smoothie rig, but for some reason i suspect it won't ;)

It don't think it will, i was thinking about installing dimes on my smoothie, but it won't work.

The only bandwidth it uses is when its contacting the servers of this project to give them your statistics - that is, not much!

I decided to create a cronjob and execute the program every day at midnight. It basically executes and sends the statistics, and exits - so nothing is really used up.

Give it a try if you would like - and whoever else who has machines with good uptime ;)

Perhaps there was some downtime or overload on the servers yesterday?

Thanks for the mirror k0nsl - needed that today since I couldn't get the win client off their site. Lets see how much abuse my work PC can endure, its scary seeing how many processes are running on this machine in taskmanager (I just counted - 64!)....muwahaha; its only relief is the odd reboot perhaps once a week - but I'll try & avoid that too now

SoulGG: when you login to your account on the uptime site, you can choose a team to join (on the left in green - in fact I think it says 'league' rather than team, scroll bottom & select XtremeSystems & save changes). Download & run the client, then enter you're username & password, hit update & check the XS page to see if you appear :)

If anyone wants to use the above code they have to change the $config[uid] variable (it can be found in the URL of their stats - I already entered yours, so you don't have to change it Staucher).

You'll also have to download a template image, such as this one:
http://glenn.studio-projekt.de/uptime/uptime8.png

And put this image in the same directory as "uptime.php" (the above code). After that it should be ready for usage.

Other template images can be found here:
http://en.uptime-project.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=510&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Or for simplicity use these:
http://en.uptime-project.net/page.php?page=myprofile&content=uptime_images

But they are loading too slowly for my taste therefore the above solution is probably the best one.

Noo! 36 days now stands as the XS record to beat :)

Selder, 260 days is v.nice indeed, is your 2k3 machine running under any load? Do you have any other machines you can add & join XS? I might join a machine or two at home, but I'm moving in two months time tho' so that limits me a bit; unless I can rig up a big UPS & drive very fast over to the new house :D

Looks like I happen to have the XS topscore now, 78 days, a windows machine nonetheless :D . Put it on my old machine that I just rdp into since I'm too lazy to move my messenging stuff over(logs). Too bad the machine will be moving with me to college in 2 weeks... Could put it on my astaro box(firewall) when I get to college, but a major version is supposed to come out soon, plus the updates sometimes need to reboot(although they usually aren't that critical).

Argggg... you ppl are so unlucky... I just joined and saw this uptime project...

I have a small mail/web/proxy server at home, which had 3 years and some days uptime, which I only formated/clean install like 2 weeks ago cause I wanted to try out something with RT Linux. :(

My workstation is at about 20 days, my other server at ~300 days and we just lost a box at work which believe it or not had an uptime since 1996 running SCO UNIX on an i486. Mobo died... :brick:

I had the WR easy, and it slipped right through my hands... How is this for unlucky? :dammit:

I wonder how many ppl with insane uptimes haven't heard of this project...

Edit: Since it (apparently) only allows one system to be used with each account at any given time, I've just joined with the one with the highest uptime I have at the moment... what a shame if I only knew about this a few weeks ago...

meshmesh
08-27-2006, 02:07 PM
So let me get this straight. All it does it measures how long the PC is on. So what happens when I do a Windows update or software update (firwall, antivirus,..) and I am asked to reboot?

ewsforos
08-27-2006, 02:19 PM
Goes back to 0 naturally... uptime is the time between power-cycles/boots pretty much. However, from what I've seen (and I haven't looked at it pretty closely yet) it DOES have an average for each user which it counts towards, so as long as you don't reboot all that often, this isn't such a big problem since it will help the team by increasing the average value.

Having said that, that's what you get for using windows :p:

In Linux the only reason to reboot is to put a new kernel to use, and even this is no longer necessary with kexec in the latest 2.6.x kernel tree ;)

jimwah
08-31-2006, 12:36 AM
...that's what you get for using windows :p:

:hehe: indeed, my XP managed to reach almost 40 days now, it had a bit of a freak out the other day but it recovered, just. >250 days ewsforos! Nice uptime :)

ewsforos
09-02-2006, 01:19 PM
Thanks :)

<linux advocate>
In 5 years it has been rebooted only 3 times... 2 of which were within 8 months because of the need for security related kernel upgrades.

This box has seen uptime on the 850 days range. I have had other systems (running linux naturally :p:) which were WELL beyond that (>1100 days), but where the need for security wasn't paramount, and they were in a restricted environment/limited access.

Oh well, it will eventually get back there :) Happy to help the xtremesystems team out anyway :)

PS: Keep in mind that this system is an actual server, running a large number of services, and it's averaging ~230-250 processes at any given time. So the uptime you see is not of a box staying idle... It is under costant load ;) I'd love to see a wintendo box doing that :p:

2Gb RAM
2x120Gb Maxtor ATA disks (raid1)
2x 100Mbit Intel NICs

We've gotta move office in January too, I might have to shift this project to a machine at home - mostly Wintendo-2k :rotf: boxes, of which 1 must've been up 3 weeks to a month hopefully - I'll have a look later on.

Gratz to ewsforos on the upcoming birthday too :toast: Party hat at the ready.

Disaster - some kind of power blip at work :slapass: Gave me a chance to do some much needed maintenance on this box tho', and that heap of updates too! Will anyone beat the 125 day XS record for WinXP? :p:

I can beat that, had 268 days out of my dual p3 667 running windows xp sp2 but had to have a new carpet fitted in the room so it had to go off.

Last screenshotted it at 205 days mind.

Needed the laptop for work purposes so I had to shut her down last night! Good thing it was at 72 days and not 172 I might have had to buy another laptop for just that reason:D

Should have another computer to replace my laptop though. Pretty soon

Still shows that machine as up on the stats?! shame about the shutdown man, at least I'm one step closer to retaking the XP uptime title ;) :p:

I'll leave it there until I get another box on the same account. then i'll have to delete the time to get another computer onto the same name.

Dear Uptime-Community,

After the last very successful 5 years with about 1.7 million data records and
more than 20000 active users, we would like to say "thank you" to everyone who
helped the project grow to what it is right now.

+++ We are very sad to say it, but we decided to close down the Uptime-Project
on the 1st of March 2007. +++

Surely this wasn't an easy decision because of all the time we invested in the
project but we don't have enough time to keep the site alive. Another problem
is, and always was, the increasing costs for servers and traffic. (Thanks to our
sponsors!)

Please shut down all the uptime-clients you're running because we can't keep the
domain name forever and we don't want somebody to get his hands on the user data
the clients are sending.

Why don't we give away the project for free and let somebody else run it?
That question is easy to answer. With more than 20000 users, there is a lot of
user data in our database (for example the email-addresses). We don't want
somebody to get his hands on this data to maintain the user.s privacy.

Again, thank your very much for competing in the Uptime-Project!

Sincerely the Uptime-Project staff

Sucks to see it go:eek:

Nooooo! I was just contemplating getting the client running again on my work PC (we've moved office & got new machines recently). It's a shame really 'cos there was some amazing records on there, but I can understand what they're saying on the privacy front.

Hopefully some passionate ex-Uptimer will create an Uptime Project II, and a new client to go with it  I hope at least.

I suppose you might have had a chance of getting the linux client to run  Sadly, its academic now.

Hi there. I just stumbled upon this thread. Unfortunately, I'm too late to even try breaking an uptime world record, but I can tell you my last W2K3 socket 478 Celeron 2.6GHz network gateway (I've upgraded it to an 805 last September) once had an uptime of nearly 150 days. And even then, I only rebooted it because I wanted to patch the OS (it IS a Windows machine, after all, I started getting worried about security flaws... lol)

I just wanted to point out that 1) there is no need for fancy hardware (as it was already pointed out). I was running the server on an Asus P4P800-VM motherboard and 3x256MB DDR-400 OEM sticks. I didn't even have an UPS (good power lines, thankfully).

And 2) Windows boxes may not be as good as *nix systems on major uptime world records, but it IS possible to get great uptimes from them.

Cheers

Miguel
