Hello

I was wondering whether the voltage regulator ICs of the KR7a are the same for KX7?

Yes both VReg chips are the same.

Can anybody explain what actually happens to the current/voltage passing through the Vcore IC when a Vmod is attached in?

It could be one of several things, the most probable being the VR signals the internal resistors to change resistance.

The VR soldered in parallel to the original resistance onboard lowers the voltage measured at the feedback pin of the chip and the error amplifier compensates by upping the output voltage. Is that clear enough?:)

here's a vmod explanation for non-geeks:

there's a chip on the mobo that regulates voltage. when you do a vmod, you tell that chip that it's not makin enough juice. the chip responds by making more juice and voila! you're overvolting your cpu.

You could get real technical and read the data sheet for the HIP6301. (http://www.intersil.com/data/FN/FN4/FN4765/FN4765.pdf) ;)
