This is the "master" thread for the second round of the OC comp. All results etc will be posted here to keep things central and in 1 place.
Other threads will be posted elsewhere, but this is the place to look for up to date info, results and comments.

This is a GLOBAL competition, anyone, anywhere can enter!!!!

So, here's the format!
Due to difficulties in sorting cheap PCI-E cards this time around a totally new format has been devised. This competition allows users to enter with their own 24/7 day to day PC's. The only stipulation is that the cards you enter can run 3dmark 2001, 2003 and Aquamark 3.

So how does it work! Well its simple. As last time theres a "stock" round and an "overclocked round" this of course refers to graphics cards!
In the "stock" round, the CPU and system is clocked to the max and the graphics card/s left at stock. In the "overclocked" round, the graphics card/s are overclocked along with the system.
Screenshots are to be provided for each of the benchmarks, along with a superpi 1m run and CPU-z screenshot showing both CPU and memory tabs. ORB compares should be provided for 3dmark 2003 (01 no longer appears to be accepting new scores)

Now, many will ask how exactly is this fair? The guys with the quick systems will win... Well, not exactly! There's a twist. This time we're introducing some control into the benching. It's no longer a case of "who can get the highest score" and more a case of "who can get a certain score"....Scoring is standardised. The below covers 3D01, AM3 and 3D03. Should be a little easier for people to pick up some points, and theres still a nice reward for those that make it all the way!

So, here's the scoring:
25% over stock score = 10 points
20% over stock score = 7 points
15% over stock score = 5 points
10% over stock score = 2 points.

As before, round UP to the nearest whole number (this shouldnt ever occur however..) You have a 100 point +- leway at EACH %.
ie 10k stock, 12400 -> 12600 = 10 points/25%.
Once you've submitted your "exact score" runs, there's a final "drag" score. This is the max score you can make over your "stock" settings. i.e the MAXIMUM overclock you can get from your graphics card.
Scoring on this will be based on percentage score increase from the "stock" score. Points are awarded per benchmark per category on a 10-1 basis. Top % overclock gets 10 points, 9th highest gets 1

A total of 3 scores are submitted per person per benchmark. 1 Stock GFX overclocked system. One "percentage overclock" score and the final "drag" score which is an all out max

Categories are: Air/water (above ambient cooling ONLY. No iced water/pelts and no sub-zero air cooling)
"other" Everything else!

The winner is the person in each of the categories with the highest overall score at the end of the competiton.

Other info
Any CPU/platform can enter AS LONG AS ALL HARDWARE USED IN THAT MACHINE IS PUBLICALLY AVAILABLE FOR THE FULL DURATION OF THE COMPETITION
SLI/Crossfire is allowed.
Softmodded/moddable cards MUST be modded for stock runs
Vmods are allowed (PM Persivore over at XS if you want any mods doing)
NO results will be accepted after the closing date (see below)
ALL entries MUST be recieved by the competition start date.
When entering you MUST state the hardware you will be using and the category you are entering
NO hardware changes can be made UNLESS they are replaced with the SAME component.
Driver DEFAULTS to be used for stock runs. Any tweaks go for overclocked (as long as they DON'T affect your system speed/pi score)
Competiton organisers say is final.

Prizes are TBC, however at the moment we have the following sponsors:
coolercases.co.uk
hosting4peanuts.co.uk
mushkin.com

Big thanks to all the above for offering to sponsor the comp. Cheers guys!

Dates:
Start date: 1st August 2006 00:00:00
End date: 31 August 2006 23:59:59

Any entrants please post the following information:

Hmm, if I use a old rig...can I run the "stock" at stock, not overclocked cpu? It's a Prescott on air cooling, and I don't trust it really....Then I can just aim for a 25% point increase by tweaking everything?

As long as the CPU/System is the same ie you get the same Pi time in both stock and overclocked then thats ok....

Need the specs noted in the first post BEFORE the start date of the competiton

Sounds like fun however I'm not to sure that a 25% score increase in 3Dmark01 soley based on gfx clocks is achievable. Please correct me if im wrong.

The CPU is at the same clock for the entire duration correct?

thanks!

you can oc the cpu at stock result but thaat limits you in the oc contest because you have to achieve 25% boost only with gfx power

Depending on if I get a Conroe and new gfx cards, I might be down. 25% increase with just GFX power will most likely limit you to crossfire/SLI as being competitive. Conroe + phase here I come!

Right... based on the fact that 25% is going to be a hard feat for a fair few people have revised the scoring a little.

15% over stock score = 5 points

it's true though. Getting that much accuracy is near impossible. It will involve just re-running 3dmark over and over again, hoping this time you get the right score.

Just think, for a minute.
Theoretical situation.

Stock GPU Scores (3dmark05);
9703
so i need to score;
10%; 10673.3
15%; 11158.45
20%; 11643.6
25%; 12128.75

Now i'm not complaing about the height of the scores, i'm sure the ball park's are all achievable. But look, they're ALL decimals, added to which, they are all really obscure numbers. For instance, i just searched the ORB, and no-one has EVER scored 12128. 12129 and 12127 but NEVER 12128.

If you want to make this fun, and fair, then you should have it at least in a certain range. So say 14.5% > score > 15.5% then it is way more interesting. That way, we have to score between 11109 and 11206, which gives us far more to work with, yet still makes it reasonably tough to achieve. That would be a lot more fun imho.

Just my (rather long) two pennies worth, of course.

jimwah

So, we're talking exact percentages down to a single point in the benches?

Yup thats right.

Thats gonna have to be some precise benchmarking skills needed! I thought it would be banded scores, like 0-10%, 10%-15% etc etc. The method Don mentioned sounds like a sensible compromise, still quite a challenge.

Don't get me wrong, I'll do badly whatever the scoring mechanism :D I'm deciding between my old 9550 agp, or my pci-e 6200tc at the moment, but I'll be in the runnning soon with something; maybe even that 'orrible 9600se from the last comp ;)

1 thing .... i noticed that you can underclock your cpu for round 1 and then overclock it for the other 2 categories.

Shouldn't the cpu and ram speeds be the same in both cases ? That way i won't downclock my chip to 1Ghz and run 01SE then clock it to 3Ghz to run the benchmark.

Once i get my card Vmodded, i'm in. :D

Am3 scales like crap too, no way will I get close to 25% with only GPU in AM3.

I can do ~15% exactly on stock cooler, will try a better cooler soon, but I dobut I will reach 20%.

it's a little more difficult with higher end systems, but still fun nonetheless. I'll be fine-tuning for a while. August 31 is the deadline date, I've got time ;)

*edit: by the way, I'll be using my P4 550 for this. And I'm watercooling the CPU and using stock air for the vid card. Sorry about the confusion Highland3r \=

Its not hard to get 22k*25%

I get like 100k Am3 stock, getting 125K from only gpu isnt easy...

But I will do it...

Guys, only a few days left to get the benchies in!

EIST is enabled, so at idle this cpu has a multi of 6, but its normal multi is 13.
13*233=3030mhz.

All are done same ram speeds and same cpu speeds.
25% are tweaked and have different gpu and video card ram speeds.
Full are full tweaked and clocks on GPU...

Good results, but I am suprised that you cannot get a higher % in 01 over aquamark.

My rig is not crappy enough to score that low, getting 77% in 01 or 100+% am3 isnt even possible for me :(

sparkY1000

Yeah I really thought 01 would be my strongest benchmark and that 03 and AM3 would be my weaker benchmarks, but when all the tweaking and overclocking was done I was amazed by 03 but nothing prepared me for AM3!! :D

I had so much fun I thought I had pushed the card before but now I really see what it is capable of! I know it isnt a £300 monster or anything but for £40 I dont think you can complain!

The card set up in the system, insulation was proving very difficult so I didn’t bother. Let her freeze over! :D

The temperature of the GPU was held at roughly -50C by a small homemade single stage vapour phase change cooler charged with r404a. The GPU voltage was 1.95v, a few days previous I had ran ~2.0v which resulted in the output inductor de-soldering itself when running at over 300MHz clock frequency, hence the slight “back off” on voltage.

Whilst benchmarking the temperature of the memories cold plate was fluctuating between -17C to -13C, indicating that this memory at 4.00v and up to 610MHz was putting out a reasonable amount of power for only eight memory IC’s…

http://www.pclincs.co.uk/Forums/attachment.php?s=&postid=92697

My favourite bucket, I estimate that the four 30W peltiers and the load of the memory was in the region of 160W. Over the course of one and a half hours I had to siphon out and refill the bucket 12 times as the water temperature rose. The water block temperature never exceeded 30C.

http://www.pclincs.co.uk/Forums/attachment.php?s=&postid=92698

There were a few millimetres of frost over the memory cold late. I knew that with running un-insulated I could not power down the peltier or vapour phase change system due to the thaw and subsequent damage to the card this would cause. Because of this the system remained powered until I had finished, which was a pain in the...

http://www.pclincs.co.uk/Forums/attachment.php?s=&postid=92699

Protection for the motherboard courtesy of a plastic carrier bag, Morrison’s is an overclockers best friend :D

At the end of the benchmark runs the cooling systems were turned off and the card allowed to thaw once removed from the motherboard. Water quickly began to drip down the card as the ice melted.

http://www.pclincs.co.uk/Forums/attachment.php?s=&postid=92700

3DMark2001 was run first using the 40.72 drivers and DirectX 8.1, LOD 10, 12, 4, 3.8. The first trial run was at 250/620MHz to test the memory performance under peltier cooling as I had not tried this before on this card, after a few runs it became apparent that the memory was degrading with the high Vdd being used, the remaining runs were done quickly as I was loosing about 5MHz every 20mins. I ended up running at 303/610MHz, I could have gotten another 2MHz from the core but I wanted to be quick:

http://www.pclincs.co.uk/Forums/attachment.php?s=&postid=92701

Aquamark3 at 305/610MHz was run with 40.72 drivers and DirectX 9.0C, LOD at 10 - by this time the memory was beginning to artefact slightly:

http://www.pclincs.co.uk/Forums/attachment.php?s=&postid=92702

3DMark2003 at 305/591MHz was run with 66.93 drivers and DirectX 9.0C, LOD at 10 - by this time I had a few bad runs and with the memory rapidly going the way of the dodo 591MHz was the best I could manage:

http://www.pclincs.co.uk/Forums/attachment.php?s=&postid=92703

Interestingly with the memory at 500MHz and stock memory voltage I was able to run the core frequency to 320MHz, perhaps this PCB didn’t lend itself to combined high core and memory clocks, or perhaps it’s something within the GF3 architecture… who knows…

This Ti200 was a good card core wise reaching 260MHz on stock air but quite disappointing considering it used 4ns memory. The maximum memory clock achievable on stock air was 500MHz with slight artefacts, which is poor for 4ns IC’s. Cooling and massive over voltage on the memory together have given a great increase. After the benchmarks were complete I played with the card until the memory was falling below 550MHz at this point I decided to pull the plug, I don’t think it’ll work again –and I don’t mind :)

With an average over the three benchmarks of 77% I think the old girls done a grand job.

Never surrender! :D

http://www.pclincs.co.uk/Forums/attachment.php?s=&postid=92705

2001 = +69.4%

2003 = +64.8%

Aquamark = +97%

Average increase is +77%
