Well, since the watercoolingboys have got their own gallery, why don't we phase changers have our own?
I'll start ;)

Got me a new Igloo container for my R404A rig. It works well, overnight with the system off my water temps only lost 1c :D
Testing a 1.8 P4 with water at -11 using a MCW-478 at 1.89volts.
It only does 2900 stable, cpu temps around 11-17 max. I'll be trying out Eli's custom 478 Copper block this weekend see if I get improvement.

I must be really stupid, I just threw away a working cooling unit like the one on OPP pics not knowing it could serve a good purpose and spend €650 on a vapochill

Hi Fella's:)
Well....after many months and many people asking for pics of my phase change chiller...I'm proud to break its virginity and post the pics here for the first time. I apologize as the pics were taken while I was still benching for the other team..and it is marked as such....I'll soon change that and repost the pics for ya's:) I'll begin by showing you a pic of what I started with...a surplus Movin' Cool on wheels spot cooler...basically a 10,000BTU air conditioner on wheels. The beauty of this puppy is its capacity. It has a massive 15"x15" Evaporator and a little larger condensor...which is cooled by a shrouded fan the size of a small car. Here is the pic of the original unit

Yeah..see that price?? I got this thing for taking it away. I just happened across it looking for something else..at a time when I was studying Phase Change and trying to decide how I was going to put a system together. When I saw this thing...I knew I was set:)
I cut the unit down to just the bare necessary sheetmetal...removed the thermostat and jumped the associated wires. I extended its frame to accomodate an old 16-18gallon Coleman picnic cooler...which is bolted to the chassis. I had a refrigeration guy come in..and plumb the evaporator to lay in the cooler at a 45 degree angle..and to the bottom, so the coolant would recieve its full effeciency. He recharged the system with R-22 and we were off. My wife bought me a Danner 750GPH magdrive pump for my birthday which is submerged and teed to send coolant to both the cpu and vid card. It's filled with 16 gallons of Texaco Havoline Dexcool and distilled water in a 50/50 mix...which will chill down to -35c. With a chip that likes those temps..it will maintain -30c for hours. With my current AGOIA XP I have to keep the temps between -25 and -20 to keep my L2 cache from dropping back to 64k. So with no further ado...heres "MRICEE"

WooooOW... nice chiller u got there MrIcee!
DDtung,
What did u changed in the vapo to get that temps!?
MrIcee
06-19-2002, 08:59 AM
Gentleman....thank you all very much:)
I have wanted to show you guys this thing for some time, especially DD and OPP as they had inquired in the Past.
JBell....these pics are about a month old...thats why I put the disclaimer in the thread that the pics were taken when I was still benching for the other team:) As soon as I get some more lettering..I ASSURE you:D , It'll be advertising XtremeSystems...and to be quite honest....it fits in here like a glove....XTREME !! LOL
I'll get some more pics of my puter desk...along with some "Frosty the Snowman" shots of my hoses and OCHideout waterblocks:)
Randi :D
PS. I've told DD and OPP this previous..but my total investment in this effecient chiller is around $275 total including the 3/8" hose and pipe insulation etc. My total outlay on the chiller alone was the cost of my good friend Art Kemmets labor (A+K Refrigeration) to replumb the evaporator and recharge the system, $246.
very COOL, MrIcee ;)
crazy setup u got there!

Randi,
Does that vapo change your power-bill much and how about noice, Can you still have your family around when starting that "heatsink"?
Mac
MrIcee
06-25-2002, 08:08 AM
Mac:)
I don't run it all the time...only about 30 minutes before I boot up..and I shut it off after I'm done. The power costs are negligble.
As far as noise...its got a big, shrouded fan..and with most of the sheetmetal removed you get alot of air noise....especialy on high speed(its a 2 speeds cooling system) It sounds like a big box fan on high basically...you can't hear the compressor much except for a very low hum.:)

So if i trip over a airconditioner then i should take it?

Just make sure its high capacity...thats the key to attaining low temps AND maintaining them...plus a large reservoir for reserve capacity:)

Hi all
OH MY godd that looks awesome :), damn u most have invested a lot oftime into building, but U get my 5 fivestars for it look`s real cool and expensive :)
SOCOM
06-27-2002, 12:18 AM
So, instead of mounting these to your cores, using something similar to a evaporator on a vapochill, you are pumping the coolant through copper pipes ina resivor full of water for a normal water cooling system?
-SOCOM
MrIcee
06-27-2002, 01:42 AM
SOCOM:)
Thats correct. Istead of direct evaporator to cpu cooling...some of us place the evaporator in a reservoir to chill a cooling medium such as anti-freeze, which is pumped to waterblocks just like a conventional "straight watercooling" system.:)

I use a 50/50 mix of Havoline Dex Cool and distilled water. The Dex Cool is a special forulation here in the states that is an extended life formula, and contains the necessary long life additives to prevent electrolysis between dissimilar metals in the cooling system.

Look at that, i might be able to get one.
I talked to the guy at that firm and there is a remote version with a thermostat that allows you to cool the water down to around 1 or 2 degrees c. I guess that is tweakable if needed.
We have around 100 of them here at my work and they are dead quiet!!
Not even a whisper.
I guess all i have to add is Inlet and outlet and a pump, right?

Hi Mackanz
Yea shure the secret is some firm bought 2 and only needed 1, and they were offered a little price so i offeréd just a little more
and i got it with a P4 kit and shipping fees so end price for me 400 Dollars. :) didnt include shipping before sry, but still a very fair price I think.
Edit : I`m gonna take some pics when i have set up with digicam, hope someone can host them, so U can see it in action, and hopefully my 1600+ will do a little more than 167x12 @1.92 Vcore :D

well first day of testing .so i thought what the hell get out the big peltier. 156watts at 13.8 volts.full loaded my block .didnt do bad at all.i had to adjust the freon some.caused my no load temps to go from -53.5 down to -45. but at least is keeping the block cold.i have 3 probes.one one the cold plate reading-43.3 one on the hot side of the peltier reading -7.5 on one on the block reading -27.7.not too bad so far.

Anyone here charging their systems with straight propane? If so.. what compressor are you using.. as in HP.. and original freon used in it..
|PuNiSh3R|
08-20-2002, 10:00 PM
Also.. did you have any trouble filling the system with propane? Put in any other type of additive? etc..
Does anyone here know if those cans of Johnston R-134A you get at Wal-Mart have ester oil in them? The straight cans.. the kind that you need the piercing valve on the top for..

it is actually two colors, right side, top and rear are red acrylic, the chiller is red acrylic on the right side, clear on the left and rear.
the other half of the case is clear, left side, bottom and front.
i had it custom made by this guy in Texas, very professional work, to my specs, and the only person I know that makes a full tower acrylic case.
here is the linkage.
http://www.clear-viewtech.com/fullv1.html
i hate to dislcose the cost of this upgrade, but i may as well. over $1500 including the Prometeia device. most of the 'puter guts i has running in my main (used to be main) rig, but it adds up, fans, black dvd and 48x burner (LiteOn's), custom 6 in 1 card reader, front USB 2.0, firewire, baybus, black floppy, modded dual PS's with red acrylic covers and fans replaced with LED 80's. internal USB 2.0 converted lappy hard, makes taking stuff to field visits a snap, couple of 60 gigger's for OS and storage, 1 gig of PC3200 ram. i am running an ATI, but i like Nividia better.
this monster powers two 21" monitors and too many externals to mention, one of them being a microscope, just for example.
working on an P4 twin, but it will take some time.

I was looking for a case with motherboard chassis in the hight.
Only because i realy hated the prom unit case ( ugly ;) )
And that was realy difficult :(
There where a few options Antec and Lian Li but those prices are sick.
So i looked @ some second hand sites like ebay etc.
Then i found this one :)
For 40 Euros :D
Its an old kanrich case (German Quality ghehehe :D).
It is an old at server with 2 300 Watt AT PSU
I completely rebuild it for prom use and had to made it ATX compatible (not as easy as i thougt it would be :D :P)
This is over 3 months of hard work :)
Theres only one bad thing its frikkin heavy (50 kg orso :( )

Too bad I dont have any benches as of yet, because everytime something gets fixed, something else breaks :( THis time I f'ed up my 2400+ by yanking the evap off too soon :o

Nice! I was torn between all aluminum colored/blue or all black anodized/w green lighting.
Mine should look close to that but all in anodized black/w green lighting. The lower window looks great! Does the cut match the cut in your tower side panel?...it looks very similar.

Wow, nice rig. all inside the case, I don't see that often.
Last pic I shot of my case dates from November 2002. Rather old:
http://www.icecoldcomputing.com/images/page_images/case_16nov2002.jpg
On top is the airtight mainboard housing to prevent condensation. In the middle is the space for hard drives, 4x 5.25" devices and one or more PSU's. The bottom part is the phase-change; in this case the Phase-Change III system which has been succeeded by my R507 chiller, and now the cascade.
The case has hand grips and wheels to make it easy to handle.

Thanks, but I found exactly what I was looking for on your site. I really like the idea of the airtight mobo box....great way to fight condensation as opposed to insulating each little component or slathering goop all over the mobo. I especially liked the clear I/O back plate idea. :D

Nope. its not.
I searched well these forums in order to find out what the best fit for the P4C800 E was...Perdro Rocha i think posted some pics of his rig back then.U have to rotate the head anticlockwise in order to get a proper fit...If i fit the head in any other way then the side of the case WONT GO IN...I suppose u have the same setup thus making such comment?

@ FaTs You can do that'd be a bit hard tho, unless you made the condensor a coil in a pvc pipe then it'd be cool.
Hmm just thought of something: Basic cascade maybe meh. You use a waterchiller to chill the condensor of another system?

You just need to make a fibre glass shourd to fit over the core, it wouldn't be hard at all.

From most people what i have seen is that the head is rotated anticlockwise thus making better contact with the chip.
I once tried clockwise and then the side panel wouldnt go in...
So its defo anticlockwise the correct order to fit the head...
I got an ATCS 201...its not as wide as the Lian Lis so its the only way...

No they are newer pics.I just removed the waterchill from it cos it was looking bad...the top box i had built for that purpose+i couldnt be arsed putting it back all together after my P4C800E died from condensation...so arctic vga cooling for the raddy and stock heatsink with fan on the NB.
The lian li kit makes the prommie wider which i DONT like cos the ATCS is a much slimmer case...and obviously more beautifull+quality...
trust me...i had a PC 65 modded before ;)

I once tried clockwise and then the side panel wouldnt go in...
Keep in mind that I am a refrigeration guy, not a computer guy. From my point of view, that evap is upside down. Whether the side panel fits or not is not my concern. The evap needs to be turned 180 degrees. You figure out how to make the side panel fit. :D
TheDude
02-21-2004, 08:41 AM
I consider myself a PC guy and own several prommies. I could be wrong, it wouldn't be the first time, but I agree it should be turned the other way. I don't know how you even got it mounted that way? I think esoteradactyl is correct.
We should ask JCV which is correct.
Epsilon
02-21-2004, 09:30 AM
Yep esoteradactyl is correct
And i do wonder how u have mounted it (it allready was a pain to turn the evap like esoteradactyl has :))
Gary Lloyd
02-21-2004, 09:47 AM
I'm thinking it might be a good idea for nventiv to add a 45 degree fitting between the evap outlet and the hose, pointing towards the center of the evap. This would make it easier to mount right, more difficult to mount wrong, and less problems getting the side panel on.
In fact, it doesn't even have to be 45 degrees, it could be 20 degrees, or 10 degrees. Anything but straight out.
Epsilon
02-21-2004, 11:41 AM
Yeah, but the problem is
Socket can be 2 ways. Upwards and sidewards
So i doubt that is smart to do
TheDude
02-21-2004, 12:12 PM
If it was upwards... 10 degrees wouldn't hamper installation and at least it would be pointing in the correct direction for a sideways install.
Bowman solved this problem on the Baker evap I have by making the cover in 2 pieces, so I can take it off and turn it around and remount it....works well.

Hi mate and thanx for replying.
So you are telling me the evap isnt working as it should be then?
Does that mean i am getting poor performance or something now?
i would really like to know why(perhaps a cross sectional view of the evap? ) it is upside down.
Is there a danger doing so then?
That means the mach 2 is designed so that the side panel HAS to be removed in certain cases because it wont go in then?:(
brwmogazos
03-02-2004, 12:36 PM
It wasnt that difficult to turn anticlockwise.
And i have seen may users mounting the evap like so :|
So whats is the problem having mounted the evap the way myself and others have done? :)
Poor performance?Danger of breaking or something, the evaporator?
chilly1
03-02-2004, 01:49 PM
Actually these evaporators are designed to partially flood for best performance and best heat transferr wiht the evap mounted thusly it will not flood...

is that direct die or waterchiller?
steff
04-05-2004, 03:10 AM
Direct die:
1hp LBP compressor, custom condenser(out of 1980 Alfa Romeo), Baker's CPU&GPU evaps;
Yeong Yang Cube Server Case, Matrix Orbital LK-204-24-usb LCD+temp probes for each evap;
Relay switch, CPU delay timer....
With Barton 2.6Ghz@2.1v and radeon 9700@400Mhz it stays -34-35C full load.

The LS is not silent but its not that noisy... If you have a silent watercooling system then going to the LS will seem noisy... but if you're used to a standard air cooling system its not loud

Did you cut the window in the LS yourself?? There is suppost to be some air holes in the side cover to allow air to pass through for ventalation, is not not a concern??
Cool job with the copper pipeing.
Master_G
07-05-2004, 06:03 AM
Its not an LS, its Mach1, if you look at the front of the unit the holes are smaller than those on the LS, and if you look at the size of the unit it is too tall to be an LS.
And the microfreezer really gives it away ;)
I have to agree about the piping though, very tidy piece of work.

Here's my Lian-Li Mach II mod that in the tradition of the 'Q-cars' I have dubbed 'Q'. I got the cooler second hand and started modding my case straight after getting it. The fit is to 0.5mm tolerances and caused a lot of stress but is fairly complete except for pulling it all apart so I can fit a 3,4C once I get it, doh. The current chip is a fairly slow but game stable 2.4C.

What about your case temps wouldn't they go incredibly high with the mach ii in there?

You're not wrong, but that doesn't happen often at all unfortunatly $$$ :)
What about your case temps wouldn't they go incredibly high with the mach ii in there?
Actually temps are unchanged at idle and rise about 7*C above what I would previously get over a long period of gaming at 100% load. It was because of this concern that I have added an extra fan at the rear of the case and changed to Thermaltake Smartfans with higher CFM. These 2 rear fans replace the single 120mm prommie fan and do a good job. Actually, during my last assembly the top blowhole fan became disconnected and I have been too lazy to reconnect it. Once I reconnect it, I would say that the internal temps will not be much of an issue at all.
