As we all might know it is coming on 19 November 2006.

The Wii console is key to Nintendo's future success.

The company has just posted a 19% drop in annual profits, warning that results for its current financial year will be weaker than previously expected.

It is looking to the launch of the Wii to help its bottom line. Nintendo plans to ship six million consoles by March next year and aims to sell 17 million games for it.

The Controller

The console has a one-handed controller that looks like a TV remote control.

It uses motion-detection sensors that allow players to control the game by moving the controller in the air.

Controls: Intuitive control for anyone using the physical motion of the main Wii Remote, which resembles a television remote control. Up to four Wii Remotes can be connected at once using wireless Bluetooth technology. The wireless signal can be detected within 10 meters of the console. Both the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers include a three-axis motion sensor. The Wii Remote also includes a speaker, rumble feature and expansion port, and can be used as a pointer within 5 meters of the screen. The Wii Remote has a power switch, plus pad, A, B, Minus, Home, 1 and 2 buttons. The Nunchuk controller includes an analog control stick and C and Z buttons.

The controller modification.

Not convinced by the remote control or just interested in standard gaming. Nintendo has not forgotten about the retro audience and they made a retro controller that looks similar to the Super Nintendo design. This can be used when players want to play Gamecube, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis and Turbo Grafix 16 games.

Price & Availability

The Wii will cost 25,000 yen or lower in Japan and $250 (£133) or less in the US, said Nintendo as it revealed its financial results.

The company added it aims to sell six million machines by March 2007.

Over time, gaming has become overwhelming to people. Wii returns gaming to simpler times while innovating game development at the same time. The unique Wii Remote gives parents and grandparents a chance to play games with their children. It gives gamers and traditional non-gamers a chance to share the same experiences in this new generation of gaming. For those who grew up on video games, Wii shows that games have not outgrown them

Wii makes you feel less like a player and more like you're in the game. Frenzied sword battles are no longer confined to pushing a button. With Wii's unique freehand controller, Nintendo puts you in the middle of the action. Forget about pushing a button to start a golf back swing. Wii lets you swing the club! Don't push a button to swing a sword, actually swing the sword. Video games have always been a part of you, now you get to be a part of them. Step up to the next level of gaming.

Wii?

Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else.

Wii will put people more in touch with their games and each other. But you are probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like we or wee which emphasizes this console is for everyone.

Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

The Look: Wii features a compact design that will make it a natural addition to any television setup. It can be displayed either vertically or horizontally.

Media: A single self-loading media bay will play single- or double-layered 12-centimeter optical discs for Wii, as well as 8-centimeter Nintendo GameCube discs.

Communication: Wii can communicate with the Internet even when the power is turned off. This WiiConnect24 service delivers a new surprise or game update, even if users do not play with Wii. Users can connect wireless using IEEE 802.11b/g, or with a USB 2.0 LAN adapter. Wii also can communicate wireless with Nintendo DS.

Specifications

The Specs: Wii boasts 512 megabytes of internal flash memory, two USB 2.0 ports and built-in Wi-Fi capability. A bay for an SD memory card will let players expand the internal flash memory. Thoughts and Conclusions

As I can see this will be the most successful video game ever in the coming years.

I'm pretty excited about Wii. "Revolution" was a truly fitting codename for this baby. I read an interview with Miyamoto on the Edge mag, their goal is to have ppl asking "Hey, why don't you own a Wii?" if they visit someone not owning it. Like you'd wonder why someone doesn't own a TV or a phone ;)

Seriously, even my girlfriend, a die-hard anti-gamer asked me to get a Wii once it's released.

Good job, big N!

My girl/friend is the same way, Nintendo is doing a damn good job at bringing non-gamers into the console loop.
How can this be the official thread, when there is no picture of the bestest controller ever made?
http://www.siliconera.com/news/0605/wiiwired.jpg

I can't wait; already got my shopping list made and finalized.

Wii Console
Wii remote
Wii Retro controller
Mario Paint
Joe and Mac

Best part, is that with the current rumored pricing, I'll have it all for under $350 dollars. Suck on that PS3.

This controller looks like a combo of the SNES and Gamecube ones. Surely good, just that I'm got used to that PS2 controller over the past years ... ;)

Gamewise, I'm looking forward to Wii Sports, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and Zelda - Twilight Princess.

You guys are on crack, that other controller is a blatant copy of the PS2 controller design. D-Pad, check...dual analog, check...shoulder buttons, check...oh and 4 face buttons? Yep, check...

Don't think it is anything like the GC. More like SNES + PS2.

Anyway I have read a lot about this system, as I get Gameinformer and I read pretty much every day at work on breaks and lunch. Some games look real promising and developers can do pretty much whatever they want and get creative with how they want to implement the many uses of the controller and the motion sensing tech into their games. For example swinging a blade, baseball bat, or golf club, throwing a pitch, lobbing a grenade, pulling back a bow and arrow, aiming a gun, and even more complex things like activating controls by using twisting, and pulling motions. Quick motions side to side can strafe or shake tackles in football. The controller can sense it all.

That controller is just for retro games, in my case it will be just for past generations.

I hope will be worth everything they said to us. The controller sense looks very promising. I will try to update the post to any coming news.:toast:

if they have the Wii Retro remote available, and its not just a concept thing, I am definatly picking up a Wii.

I didn't hate the N64 cause of the game... I hated it, cause the games were unplayable for me, cause of the controller.

the Gamecube was almost there, but it just never felt comfortable playing games with such a small controller.

I really hope they make this retro one... all I want is simplicity again from nintendo.

As I thought Nintendo Wii will be the most cheapeast console ever for a mere 170$ = 99£. That is an awesome price for a next generation console. :slobber:

Speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz, executive VP and COO of EA's worldwide studios, David Gardner, has revealed that the publisher believes the console will retail for around US $170 in North America.

In an interview to be published later this week, Gardner said: "I've heard in Japan that the price is about $170, but I don't know if the price has been set in Europe yet."

Gardner went on to discuss the key differences between Sony's PS3 and Nintendo's new console, saying he was confident that the Wii will find its niche in the market as consumers' 'second' console.

"Nintendo has come up with a very clever strategy," Gardner said.

"They've made a choice which is great for the consumer. Now we're going to have a choice whereby consumers can buy a Wii, plus one other console."

Nintendo has so far declined to reveal exact details of a release date or price point for the Wii. However, the company has previously confirmed that the console will retail for less than US $250, and will launch before the end of this year - with shipments estimated to total 6 million by the end of March 2007.

I wanted one back when I heard about the controller..then I kept reading...sub $250 price, compatable with all GC(which I have) controllers/memory/games..I was double sold..but it just kept coming...ability to download/play any Nintendo game from any console and then some...and to top it all off..it can play DVDs too!
I'm primarily a PC gamer, which is why I don't own the PS2/Xbox and don't plan on getting a 360 or PS3. Nintendo has really raised the bar with their controller..let's hope the software uses it's potential!

This will be sitting next to my DS and XBox 360 on UK launch day....and I expect the missus to play it almost as much as she does the DS - Nintendo are doing well getting women to game :)

No, I think it will change lots of things OUTSIDE of the game industry. It will probably have an effect on most other entertainment industries as well.

I think as a whole(inside and outside). :)

30 games available to download on day one

The Nintendo Wii will launch in the US November 19th, priced just under US$ 250 (197 euros / GBP 133) and will come bundled with a copy of the game Wii Sports.

Japanese consumers will have to wait an extra two weeks for the launch on December 2nd, but the console will retail slightly cheaper, at 25,000 Yen (167 euros / GBP 113), without a copy of Wii Sports.

Japan will see 16 titles at launch and will range in price from 4800 Yen (32 euro / GBP 22) to 6800 Yen (46 euro / GBP 31). 25 titles are purported to be available at launch in the US, priced around US$ 50 (39 euro / GBP 27)

At a press event, Nintendo of Japan president Satoru Iwata also revealed the pricing structure for downloadable games via the WiiConnect24 service.

NES games will sell for 500 Yen (3 euro / GBP 2), SNES titles will cost 800 Yen (5 euro / GBP 4) and N64 games will retail for 1000 Yen (7 euro / GBP 5).

Consumers will be able to purchase downloadable titles with either a credit card or pre-paid points cards.

Around 30 games will initially be available to download from the Virtual Console service, including titles from the Mario, Zelda, R-Type and Donkey Kong franchises.

Nintendo hopes to increase the number of titles available via Virtual Console by ten games a month, quickly establishing a library of content for consumers to download.

The console itself will come with the motion-sensitive remote controller and 'nunchaku' thumb-stick attachment, with additional controllers costing 3800 Yen (24 euro / GBP 17) and 1800 Yen (12 euro / GBP 8) respectively.

The classic controller, primarily designed for use with NES and SNES titles, will retail in Japan for 1800 Yen, although a limited offer will see it bundled for free with a 5000 point pre-paid card.

Highly anticipated title The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will be a launch title for Japan and will makes its way to US shores before the end of 2006.

The Wii's online service will also include a range of media functions, including access to news and weather channels, web browsing and digital photos.

Nintendo is due to host a press event tomorrow in the UK, releasing full details of the Wii launch, including games available from day one and new titles for the European region.

$249 for the Wii, includes Wii Sports. Good price. I would rather pay less and not get Wii Sports. Not a big deal though. IMO, Snes and Nes games are overpriced at $8 and $5 respectively.

It depends.

I would rather playing Snes in my computer than on Wii, first for save states I really like the way the games are saved, also you can play it in high resolutions on a PC.

The Wii is cheaper than a Xbox360 and 3X less powerful than it. The price in my point is not fair. I thought it would be at maximum of 199$ (100£). I'm expecting a price of 149£ in United Kingdom. I hope Nintendo will not put Wii sports in the kit in the european version.

They said early in the E3 that Wii would cost 249$, so something they got right.

I'm happy for all the people that do not know emulators and now all the great games made for great developers will be available for the public of all ages.

I just imagine people starting playing Final Fantasy 4 and thinking how good were the games at that time.

Greetings Wii.:toast:

save states do not not really heklp getting better. they just help u on some games to through them almost perfect.

the price is alright, but u calculated something wrong, cause u do not pay for the pure power - u pay to compensate the development costs AND u also get the most advanced controlling system on the market:cool:

what really :banana::banana::banana:s me up is the european price of 249€ which is way over 249$ - but wtf...WiiLL rock!

Yes read this.

The Japanese and US conferences were followed by the European-centric meeting, held at 12pm today in London, where Nintendo finally announced the pricing and launch dates for the European market - but not until after a lively Wii tennis game between Tim Henman and Greg Rusedksi, commentated by Gabby Logan. Which was nice.

The Wii will be launched in Europe on December 8th  and will be priced at £179 :slapass: in the UK or €249 :slapass: (around £168) in the Euro-taking mainland. Similarly to the US, the Wii will come packaged with Wii sports :slapass: , unlike the Japanese console package.

The US price translates to around £133 or €197, so it looks like Blighty and Europe (to a slightly lesser extent) are being ripped off once again.

Australia will receive the Wii on December 7th priced at $399.95 (AUD), also including Wii sports, which translates to about £160.

Nintendo have also announced that the Wii console will not offer DVD playback :woot: , stating that most people already have a DVD player, whilst also allowing them to reduce costs. Third party publishers will have the option to region-lock their games  , similar to Xbox 360 software, and it will not be compulsory.:(

I decided in buying the US version, it is faster than (EU version 50 FPS(Pal)) X (US JP version 60 FPS(NTSC)). I will be getting Zelda and much more games the import is about 40£ so not to worry about.

I hope Nintendo will make good games with the Controller resources.

The launch day in London will be many shops seeling it. The availability here will be so far great. I do not know about USA but for what I heard so far will be many too. I think pre order the Wii, is not a good thing to do. I hope Zelda will be available as well as Nintendo Wii in stock.

A rep from Nintendo said they changed the name from the Revolution (its original name) to Wii because it was much shorter and universal in all languages. It was getting complicated to translate "Revolution" all over the world, they said.

I guess they just wanted something simpler. I like the play on words with the Wii-mote though.

Here is a nice list of the launch titles. (http://ms.nintendo-europe.com/wii/?site=w_launchtitles.html&l=enGB) There are some more titles though, (http://ms.nintendo-europe.com/wii/?site=software.html&l=enGB) I especially like Super Smash Bros. Brawl (http://ms.nintendo-europe.com/wii/?site=games_smashbros.html&l=enGB), but it sadly enough is not a launch title. BTW here is another nice trailer of Smash. confident Nintendo has reaffirmed its commitment to the launch of the Wii, reiterating its promise of four million units for retail before the end of the year, as it expects unprecedented demand from consumers.

Bolstered by pre-orders and retailer feedback, the company aims to pull out all the stops to supply demand in a retail environment it expects to dominate this side of Christmas.

"Wii is for both experienced and uninitiated gamers, and it will be available for the masses," said Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime.

"Because of demand, we're urging shoppers not to get complacent. The level of demand we're seeing goes beyond the ordinary."

"Retailers are telling us a significant fraction of customers pre-ordering Wii are non-traditional gamers - people looking for a better way to play. And that's exactly what Wii is designed to provide," he added.

Clearly confident of its manufacturing capabilities and supply chain, the format-holder has promised to fill retail shelves with product with a launch strategy that can be deemed more efficient that its competitors.

Last year Microsoft struggled to supply retailers with enough units of the Xbox 360 leading to a shortage of hardware well into the new year.

And Sony's launch of the PlayStation 3 later this month has been hampered by poor manufacturing capabilities, with shipment targets missed and a delay to the release of the console in Europe.

Wii is due to launch on November 19th in the US, December 2nd in Japan and across Europe on
