285 is dualcore and 248 is single core.

Correct,

Opteron 285 is S940, 2.6GHz dual-core, 2-way
Opteron 248 is S940, 2.2GHz single core, 2-way

Equally good question would be "why would you get a 2-way Opteron system now when it won't be terribly long before the new Opterons are released?" The new ones are coming out in what... like 2 days (correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought it was July 1). They'll support DDR2 (though not FBDDR2) and should offer better performance.

Edit: Date issues aside, one thing I do know for sure is that they will use an entirely new numbering system and will all be dual-core (or quad/octect as time goes on... but no more single-cores).

Wait till august before making any new amd purchase, even opterons.

Otherwise, prepare for the value of your chip to drop by 50% in 1 month.

oh my question was, theres like different model numbers for dual opterons. Why would i get the newest model instead of an older and cheaper one?

Older and cheaper ones are slower. Also, 242 to 256 or something like that are all single cores, while 260 to 290 are dual cores. 1xx series is for single processor systems. 2xx series is for dual processor systems. 8xx series is for 4 and 8 way systems.

Only prbs with older s940 CPU is limited upgrade path, socket f 22xx opterons supposedly out in couple wks, i think I would wait, like perkam says s940 cpu must drop considerably to stay in touch with woodcrest
