It's more what the M/B needs and 90% uses 8-pin today I believe.

Depends on the MB, and the higher-end ones take EPS12V

It doesn't depend on the m/b but on the cpu.
Till now the only cpu's that require EPS12V are 955/965. Don't know about conroe cpu's though, but i don't think that they'll require EPS12V due to their limited power requirements.

Requirement is completely up to the MB. Some MB's wont POST (ie. Bad Axe) without supplying power to all 8 pins (4 power, 4 ground actually). Using a 4-pin to 8-pin adaptor does the trick just fine though if your PSU doesn't have the correct type.

CPU doesn't care where the power comes from as long as all voltages on VCC pins are in specification (picture yourself on a bike peddling as fast as possible with regulated voltage lines running straight to the MB...) :D
