View Full Version : What is the proven difference between 965 and 975 anyway?

My 2 coppers tell me that:
975 = High-end, Crossfire native
965 = No native dual card support although you will find dual 16x pcie slots. In some cases suggesting that its crossfire. In the future I can also see this being sli as well. There is really nothing stopping this from happening. Though it is "newer" and along with supposed C2D memory performance improvements, it's always paired with the superior ich8 southbridge.

remember the intent was to keep the 965 chipset from a specific crossfire, sli setup it doesn't mean that it will. Some have rumored that the 965 is in fact the 985 or a variant there of.

Buy none of this is actually proven in performance benefits...

this review seems to show that the 975 performs better that 965 by a bit for the most part. They used a Presler i believe though. with conroe it COULD be different, who knows.

Seems like you've got a handle on the main differences. 975 offers PATA support, the 965 only SATA. Thanks to the ICH7 & ICH8.

I see...Something I believe I missed is that the 975 officially supports only up to DDR2-667, the 965 DDR2-800.

Thats odd... the Asus 975X boards with conroe support all support 800MHz ram as well 0.o

It's printed on the box that it supports only 667MHz memory but I put 800MHz memory in mine and it recognized it and works fine, I forgot to check whether CPU-Z shows the right memory speed since even 667MHz is fast enough with my FSB speed not able to go over 1333 yet. :\ It might have changed between rev 302 and 304 or maybe the 800MHz support was added in a BIOS update.

Yes well official support on my old P5LD2 is only DDR2-667 but the board has an unofficial DDR2-800 setting that works just fine.
