Is the X6800 worth the extra money over the E6700 when only using aircooling?

I wouldn't say so, 6700 has a high enough multi to be not limited by the board on air cooling, 6800 would just mean you end up with a lower FSB.

You'd probably get a higher OC from the X6800 by a couple hundred Mhz. Whether that is worth it is up to you. Is 0.6 seconds in SuperPI 1M worth $500 to you?

nah.

Would've been cool if there was more of a difference.
Like 6-8MB L2.

I'm glad someone asked this question, had the same thoughts, yeah the E6700 looks to be ideal even the E6600? Best go with something like these and splash out on better DDR2 or motherboard

I believe all EEs do.

does X6800 have unlocked multis upwords?

My question exactly :slobber: I haven't seen an exact answer anywhere.

955 and 965 XE had them unlocked, AFAIK earlier P4's didn't

i think thats because noone knows for sure yet (since there are no production EE's around), even the ES's floating around have different locked/unlocked multi's..

personally, im going with a 6600 first, then get a 6700 a few weeks later. the extra cash for the 6800 is well spend for other parts in one of my pc's..

only for braggin' rights and serious overclockers
Conroes seem to held back by the boards, at least EE is...

Honestly if you are even asking the question, probably not. There are various perks for the EE's but rarely are they worth the money. They may clock higher. They may not. Even if they do, the extra few mhz is probably not worth the higher margin. The people buying EE's are either going sky high in extreme's and need the open multi (IF that turns out to be true on the 6800, which we aren't sure yet), or aren't overly worried about the extra cost.

If you are wanting to be smart with your budget, save the money and have enough saved that when Kentsfield or something newer comes out, you have the money to buy it and drop it in your board. I'm sure I'm not the only one with a cpu or two left lying around that has no real use anymore.

^ That's exactly what I'm doing. Getting a 6600 or cheaper Allendale for the time being (heck, I might even stick with my 165) and then getting Kentsfield Q12007.

You won't be alone I can guarantee you that.

I look at it like this... the EE/FX line of chips are for the following situations: Money is no object, and/or you're trying to set WRs. :)

And if you aren't "sure", and many times even if you are sure, you should afford it, you probably shouldn't. ALWAYS remember how fast the next thing comes out. $500 now and $500 6-8mo from now is quite often faster and better than the one who spent $1k now.

I'm thinking of the 2.66 ghz version because it should be able to hit 3.5 on air and my memory will do 700 mhz at 3-3-3-10. So 350 fsb at 10x multi sounds pretty good for my situation.

yeah i dunno, i am thinking E6600 since its cheap, and hicook did 3.9 Ghz stable already,

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=103918

i havent seen any 4.1Ghz E6700 on air, i ithkn E6600 is the best performance/price chip

but in ur case, E6700 is better, X6800 will probably generate much heat and even with unlocked multiplier i doubt it can go highger than say ... 4.3Ghz on air , E6700 can do 4GHz easily

Yeah it's not like the 6800 is the only one that clocks high, lol!

Given how well Conroe seems to do on air/WC, are X6800s a no-brainer for people on SS phase or beyond?

MrGarrison

Okay thanks for all the replies, now I'm certain i will stay with my E6700 pre-order (and get myself a R600 on release)...

theteamaqua

yeah if ur air, get E6600

water - E6700

TEC, phase, ss, ln2 - X6800

i think thats it

Whay air for 6600 and water for 6700, out of interest?
