Hey guys,
I am thinking of selling my current setup and moving to Conroe when it is released. My question is, with current predicted prices, what kind of combo would I be able to afford on a $550 budget? I would need a cpu, mobo, and 2gb of ram. I have not done much research into the Intel side of things as I figured I would stay with my current setup for quite a bit longer. I have a watercoolin loop and would be looking to push the setup as far as possible. So, please build me the best oc'ing setup possible with a $550 budget.
Thanks

You could go with an E6600 (approximately 300-350 bucks) and a good MB for aournd 200 (if you go with an ATI RD600 chipset, it may be lower, 150-180ish). The E6600 would give you about equivalent to 5 or 10% over an FX-62 overall.

He needs ram too... And 2 GB of ram is between $160 and $200 for DDR2 ram (667 or 800).

ooops, missed the ram part -- that will make it tough to squeeze into a 550 budget, you may need to knock down to the E6400 and a slightly less expensive MB. But based on the data you will not be dissapointed, the next grade down Core 2 Duo (E6400) appears to come within spitting distance of an FX-62. (NOTE: I compare against the FX-62 not as a jib, but as a point of reference).
The 2.13 GHz processor does a pretty good job for 200-250 bucks. A MB for 150 bucks, and 100-150 for 2 gig ram (not gonna get you the best ram, but workable).
For a quick compare against an FX-60, see this link:
http://www.pconline.com.cn/diy/evalue/evalue/cpu/0605/791941_13.html (same site I linked in the E6400 question thread).
When you think about it, you would be getting MB, Ram, a 2.13 GHz Core 2 duo and FX class performance for possibly 500 bucks. Wow.

Thanks for all the great suggestions thus far..
Now my question is, How much would I have to OC the E6400 to beat a 3ghz Opteron 165 (which is my current setup) and how easily attainable will this be on water...
I realize now that I am asking a lot of specific questions on a chip that isnt even out yet but do try and give me your best educated guess... :(

E6400: 250$
Asus P5B: 150$
1024MB PC5400: 100$
That would beat a Opty+DDR by 50%
(E6400 can do 3,3GHz on air)

There is a reason we have this: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=101396
**Scroll Down to Intel Section**
Links for conroe and conroe mobos lead to main newegg site because they aren't released yet, but prices and combos are real.
