gigabyte has only ever validated premium memory on their website and I havn't run accross an answer from searching. Since there's more than a few people at xtreme's who have one I figured I'd ask.

use 1 gb dimms of all the same brand and it should work

Eh, no. Low vs high density is a technical issue that can't be solved by buying the same brand.
