Apple battens down the hatches

MAC DEVELOPERS have been stripped of the freedom to fiddle with the OS X kernel source code.
The move comes to light after Apple this week posted security fixes for a total of 43 OSX and Quicktime vulnerabilities.

It is true that the source code for the kernel is no longer available, in fact it has never been available for x86 Macs.

The conclusion in the above article is nonsense, however. The source code is not withheld because it would make it too easy to write exploits to install visusses. If it was Windoze wouldn't be that flooded. In fact it is often easier to exploit problems like buffer overflow on assembly level anyway.

The title "Pirates" caused this is even more nonsense.

The most likely reason why the source code for Darwin/x86 is withheld so far is that it would probably be trivial to compile your own kernel that is not locked to Apple's hardware.
