I did, dell was losing contracts were all the profit was to HP... in servers.
I think you will slowly start to see Dell add AMD to their product line over time.
When customers keep demanding opteron servers... someone has to listen.
Intel really should have put added an on-die memory controller to xenon a long time ago

The power of ownership. When the owners of the company demand numbers, even Michael Dell's whored-out-to-Intel ass has no choice.
Dell's as slow as the average consumer. No wonder they get along so well.

Wonder if intel is going to stop giving Dell those deep discounts now.
guess it depends on when the contracts are up :D
this can only be good for the consumer, if intel raises their price, dell will raise theirs, and they'll have to justify those costs, most likely with performance, either with tweaks or no loading so much crap

That's hit the share price .. along with the current slump in the US stock market it might be a good time to buy Intel before the new product range gives it a boost later in the year.

Because if you compare 4 Woodcrest cores to 4 opteron cores.. Even if you don't believe it.. Woodcrest gets ass beat.. Woodcrest is a GOOD SINGLE/DOUBLE proc SMP setup but it just doesn't remotely scale well :fact:

are there comparisons out already?

Just the Quad WoodCrest scores and you can look up a quad 880 setup and see the damage it inflicts.

now my question is, Since "DOH!" err I mean Dell will be using AMD server chips, will this cause them to raise, even a little in price?

Given the recent boom in AMD's production.. it might actually cause the Price to drop a little :D
are there comparisons out already?
its all in the northbridge....

And it will stay this way until Intels server chips get on die mem controllers, or decide to put multiple memory controllers in the NB.
And hell hasnt frozen over yet. It will freeze over when Dell ships desktop machines with AMD chips in them.

Or just start using AMD's HTT links and then scaling wont be an issue but Intel is too proud to do that...

it's logical for them to do so....

AT's (dailytech) take on it.
Hell Freezes Over: Dell Goes AMD
http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=2428
Some are saying that Dell's almost too-quiet announcement about using Opteron servers could be linked to Intel's anti-trust case against AMD. The chip giant is currently facing a court battle with AMD over fair competition and market monopoly.

What Quad Woodcrest? Woodcrest are only up to 2 sockets.

This is awesome for me, I just moved into the server support side and now we are gonna release AMD servers as well!!
I can't wait to get my hands on one of these Power Edges once they show them to us.
w00t good stuff.

Shares of AMD (Research) surged up 14.5 percent. By contrast, shares of Intel fell 5 percent.
This is why AMD does not care about Core, and why K8L will rape in the server arena ^^
All about the $$.

Agreed, scaling wouldn't be an issue if HTT links were used. But I seriously doubt Intel will do that simply b/c they would have to pay patent royalties for EVERY single system sold using that.
That's just too much pride for them to swallow.
Actually HTT is an open standard.. and the patent royalties are actually extremely cheap.. infact you can buy them and design a device to connect directly into it..
