View Full Version : tt bt vs. xp-120
Would I see a drop in temps with a big typhoon on a naked opty compared to what i have now (xp-120 with the ihs reapplied with as5). My 24/7 oc is getting a bit toasty as summer approaches. (300x10 1.53v)

yes if you do the modifications to the big typhoon I expect you might gain a few degrees.

I've ran my non-naked SD3700+ @ 1.65V 24/7 for about 10 months now with Big Typhoon, 42 - 43C full load during cold winterdays, 44 - 45C during summer. ;)
Stock BT fan, AS5, slightly lapped base and 8x silent case fans. Ran a ~7min prime session during winter at 1.71v (1.72v in BIOS), and the temp jumped between 44 and 45C after 5mins.

I say underclock your cpu. Why not run 2.8@1.4. Should be fine and you won't notice the difference between that and 3GHZ.

we just did a review with 6 high end coolers that have heatpipes.

both are in the round up
and that is with the big typhoon not lapped and with the holes not plugged correct??
Does anyone know how the big typhoon reacts to different CFM fan? I would be re-using the 93.7CFM tt in my sig. thanks

2.8GHz @ 1.4v? u crazy? My crap SD3700+ won't even go even 30min stable past 2.7GHz no matter volt. :(
It overclocks only ~200MHz with stock volt and I refuse to run ANY lower than 2.7GHz but it requires even 1.65v to be gaming stable, not prime stable tho. Prime temp after ~15mins or so @ 2.7GHz 1.65v shows during summer 44 - 45C and winter 42 - 43C so Big Typhoon is a damn good cooler from my experience at least. But do not forget the lapping & good case airflow in case you want to see such results...
Hopefully Opteron 165/X2 3800+ gets cheaper soon so this CABHE 0520VPAW can retire. Chances of an Opty 165 or 3800+ @ 1.55 - 1.6v clocking worse than 2.7GHz should be pretty minimal... but it could prolly happen for me with my luck.

In my tests, a TTBT spanked a lapped XP120. (http://forum.abit-usa.com/showthread.php?t=103462)
This is all tested on an open test bench, so plenty of fresh air being delivered. I was okay with running my Pres-hott a little hotter than the review above for the sake of separating the performance.
The thread also has my results for bigger fans on each of the heatsinks. TTBT on page#4.
