today introduced AMD Turion™ 64 X2 mobile technology, the first and only family of 64-bit dual-core processors designed for thin and light notebook PCs. AMD Turion 64 X2 mobile technology allows people to get more from their mobile lifestyle through long battery life and outstanding performance, even when using multiple applications simultaneously, including demanding digital media applications.

Continuing its technology leadership, AMD also is bringing 64-bit computing to the Mobile AMD Sempron™ processor family. Now AMD delivers the only complete mobile product portfolio offering the ability to seamlessly transition between 32- and 64-bit computing.

$184
Better price for dual cores I must say

sweet. I'm gonna be picking up a laptop by August, and now I've gotta choose b/t this and Merom. It's a tough life, isn't it? :D

DAM those prices are dirt cheap.

Where is nn_step?????

HEY nn: Socket S1 is here!

_/-\O_

Too bad I've already got a Core Duo notebook otherwise these babies would be the one for me.

On one hand it's nice AMD came through with Socket S1 ahead of schedule, on the other hand it's a shame it's not S754. It would be a great upgrade for a lot of S754 users (and my server ;) )

Also: It'll be a while for actual notebooks with these CPUs to be in store. In my experience (but that could be just me) that always takes a bit longer with AMD then with Intel. Intel's new stuff is always in store fast...

I don't think they are socket S1 yet.

EDIT: yes they are. My bad.
I got a question though, is the memory on them still single channel?

NO Dual.. DDR2 memory :D

So thats how they can lower the pin count so much. single channel + DDR2 should keep a Turion X2 quite well fed.

Dimitriman

Ah...
well can anyone explain to how they can manage so fewer pins? Would it be cause of less power consumption?

Thorry

Jup, less power = less pins...

Almost 60% (average) of a CPU's pins are used for power (vcc and vss)

nn_step

Lower current and voltage requirements

Interesting.. sounds like a nice upgrade, 180 euro dual core DDR2, just hope they make some desktop mobos for S1.

Thorry

Well they are going to release the exact same CPUs on AM2 so there's no need for that ;)

It does support Dual Channel.

Not quite.. there are a few finite Details for AM2 that most certainly are not on S1

Any word on clockspeed of those models?

The question is how do they overclock?

Thorry

If they work at all in desktop motherboards.

AMD is releasing simular CPUs for the desktop so it is possible, could also be they require different microcodes so it's just impossible to get them running in a desktop board. (Without some BIOS wizardry that is)

DAM those prices are dirt cheap. QFT

nn, you must be thrilled eh? :) That is if you're stilling waiting for s1 :)

Two things that intrigue me here:

- Cheap dual core mobile chips
- Promised support from third party northbridge makers (ATI being one)

At $183, these'll add another dimension to dual core mobility, but I don't know if it'll dethrone yonah.

perk,

hasnt there always been 3rd party NB support for AMD.. Intel is the one that has the market on the NB's for their[Intel] CPU's (and for good reason).

When these chips are out (they are S1 Dual Channel DDR2 correct?) they wont be going up agaisnt Yonah, but rather Merom correct?

Though Merom may come a tadbit after Conroe if only because the yonah platform can compete with the Turion X2 without compromises.

Will be interesting to see the benchies, but with a name like X2, I'm expecting more of the same from AMD :( .

I've got an Acer 5104 with the Turion x2 TL56 to replace my 4 year old Compaq TC1000 with a 128 bit 1GHz Transmeta CPU, this tablet is still working fine with no failures at all! The TL56 is basically made of two 3000+ CPU's with 1256KB of cache.

The motherboard is ATI branded with their Radeon Xpress 1100 chipset, which has an integrated 110nm x300.

There's 1GB of dual-channel 5-5-5-15 Kingston RAM.

Here are my preliminary results with Sandra 2007 Lite:
12950 MIPS
10950 MFLOPs (a standard desktop FX57 does 8542MFLOPs :D )

32810 it/s integer
36569 it/s floating point

4027 MB/s
4005 MB/s (a little low?)

The Laptop scored 657 points in 3DMark2005.

These results are preliminary, will be overclocking soon!
