It could very well be Sony only wanted to show off the quality future blue-ray movies (or rather their high bit-rates) will bring. I don't think too many people doubt blu-ray will work when it arrives.

Sony can't seem to get their act together lately.

Sony is becoming one of the most hated companies like M$, so everything they fail is criticised. With this I'm not defending Sony, but as Cybercat says, lately they seem to crap everything they do :D

Like GranTurismo running in a PC and MGS4 in X360 hardware (rumours)

I wouldn't go that far. Sony's fundamental issue is that when developing most technology they have competing interests. There are many Sony items that remain excellent, like their rearprojection LCD TVs, their DVD players and other assorted electronics (non-gaming). Where they have been really slipping up is trying to force proprietary standards on the world seeking the licensing fees. Outside of the CD which they share with Philips, Sony's record when it comes to proprietary formats (Minidisc, AAC encryption, memory stick and probably blue ray) have been huge and expensive flops.

They deserve to die and trying their best to do so.

Fine with me.

It turned out that that wasn't ment to be an actual blu-ray disk at all. It was just a mockup laptop used on a display. In essence it was a DVD player made to look like a laptop and be pretty. The reporter did it to get hits for his site.

Well the site currently says there were 2 laptops, 1 blu-ray and the other dvd-r to show the difference in quality, this seems much more likely to me as a false launch like this would be crazy considering desktop blu-ray drives are nearly here (4 weeks in the uk).

All this Sony bashing seems to be another internet fad creeping up. Soon to be on YTMND!

MGS4 on 360 and GT on a PC. Mere rumors by ignorant fanboys. Untill I see some cold hard facts, sorry. At E3, I don't think one could cover up such things like that. There have ALWAYS been leaks at E3 on such things. It's not some government secret and if it WERE true, it would be posted all over the place like wildfire.

False!

This I believe it false as well. More people trying to start even more crap.

Why is sony becoming the new M$ :S

Agreed, they went have been going overboard with the proprietary hardware (which i believe will surely come to a halt if blu ray duznt work out as planned) but sony has brought us some great stuff

I for one loved the original PS and the PS2, and am waiting for the PS3

i do game on PCs but Consoles are a whole diffrent zone, plus on consoles, the way i play games, the gameplay is most important, whereas on the pc, It best look good!

And i probably will buy the ps3, cuz of mgs4 and ffx13, besides, a blu ray drive wouldnt hurt

And thts just how i feel abt the PS scene, Like the guy before me, they have other great electronic innovations

And as for ripping off ideas, as long as its not patent infrigenment, its all good, and sony has Implemented some great products even tho they may have not been the 1s innovating the technology

The way i see it, they are a big corp, who spends alot on R n D which usually means benefit for us

It's all about the Civic. I wouldn't touch any other Honda, ever.

its cause i've never seen Honda at the top 3 of the QC list or manufacturing plants.
Toyota is always up there and yet they are priced lower than equivalent Hondas and are better cars by far.

I'm not a Toyota fan by any means.......Nissan all the way but those are the facts.

I'm pretty sure someone skewed the facts on this one.

PC Magazine's Lance Ulanoff would like to set the record straight about yesterday's Blu-ray fiasco. Here is what he had to say:

Did Sony have a commercial Blu-ray content disk there or not? That's the big question regarding Sony's now infamous 10-year anniversary party. Many people, including Sony, say I got the story—all five relevant sentences of it—wrong.

Yes, there were two AR laptops with Blu-ray drives on that table, each one with a crowd of people waiting to see it. Between the laptops was a placard noting that these were both the current models of the AR, the first laptop with a Blu-ray drive. There was no indication in words or print that this was some sort of visual comparison, as Sony has suggested. I scooted as close as I could to the laptop on the left side, took a bunch of photos and then pressed eject on the Blu-ray drive and out popped the drive and DVD+R. I took a photo because I was surprised, amused and a tad disappointed.

As you may know, this story has created quite a fury of activity across the web on Slashdot, Engadget, and Digg. While it's true that I did not check the drive of the second AR laptop, I thought both laptops were showing the same thing and saw no need to investigate the second seemingly duplicate setup.

Earlier today, I spoke with a Sony PR rep about what, the company says, I should have seen. According to Sony, there was a demonstration going on there and the laptop on the right-hand side had inside it a Blu-ray disc that was "not final master." I'm not sure what that would have looked like. I wish I had seen it.

The rep did not know why the left-hand laptop had a DVD+R instead of a commercial DVD. He said, "We're still trying to find out. Obviously, internally we own the rights to [that movie]." However, he thinks it may have had something to do with wanting to get the right kind of content playing on the standard DVD laptop so Sony could show off an "apples to apples comparison."

The Sony rep believes I should have come straight to him when I saw the DVD+R. Had I thought this was a momentous discovery, I would have. But the fact that I found no Blu-ray disc was, to me, humorous and not some indication of bait and switch.
