View Full Version : flare or braze
ok i have some flare sight glasses that i want to use in the low stage of a cascade but have noticed that very few here use flare parts in there builds
is this just a cost thing or psi pressure

I always thought it was just because it is less likley to leak but that could just be me :)

Cost and inconvience, but after you've done a flare you can easily re-use any parts. They are also fine for pressure. I havent had to use a flare yet, but I have 2 steel condensers so I geuss I'm going to need to.

It's all about preference. They work the same. If you have flares, by all means use them.
With a flare you have the possibility of a leak. If you do the flare properly you may never have a leak. As for me, I use flares as little as possible. I'm not a "flare master":(

But with mixing metals its sometimes needed.
Like steel and copper, I honestly have no idea were to get the correct brazing rods for the application, so I'm going to have to flare probably.

I have a danfoss sight glass for my cascade which is braze joint, but will probably flare it so I can use it on another system with ease and as little mess as possible.
Baz we should meet up again and build these cascades together, u, me, and thicky :)

thanks guy that helps allot

15% silver brazing rods with flux, with my eye's closed:)

Actually mixing metals is one place i would avoid flare. Different expansion rate.... But than I am not flaremaster myself. Hate it and only use when I must. And leak test exntended time when I have flare joints... since I am not good at it... even after doing it for numerous times. (yes sometimes, you just are forced to like flared tev, filterdrier, etc)

that is true, standard is copper n brass, over time they could work them selves loose if too dissimilar, flares are just as good as braze but do need a bit more of an intuitive maintenance schedule to check things more often every few months or 10,hours or some thing like that

What type of flux and where can I get it?

Welding shop?
I use both flaring an brazing connections. If made properly flaring is nice to connect filters, sightglasses, TEVs and manometers to the unit. But brazing is cheaper and faster.

Ask for flux for silver containing brazing rods.

If you look at any industrial ac units you would notice that the only place they get really dusty is around flares, thats because they leak, and with the leak comes out the oil, which makes the dust stick. As an hvac engineer once told me a leak on an industrial system of a few pounds of refrigerant may not even make a degree worth of difference, but fractions of a gramm on a very small system can seriously ruin things.
If you have no problems with brazing its a better way to go leak wise.

Also you can always braze to brass quite easily in my experience, so technically I geuss you could braze a flare shut?

youd need to braze both sides of the nut, which makes me ask why use the nut at all..

braze it.....and your adding a sight glass to the 2nd stage?? Why???/ You could lose some capacity
