I have these ramsinks: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835126051 and have already used them on a card and have successfully removed them and now hope to use them on my X1800XT. How should I go about doing this? Would there be any way to do it with normal thermal compound (AS5)?

When I helped my friend reapply his, I just cut up one of those thermal pads they give you with the stock processor. He also had some from an NV Silencer that we used.
AS5 might not hold them on tight enough, but I wouldn't risk it. You can buy some thermal tape fairly cheap, I would assume.

I personally use a drop of as5 on each sink, put the card flat on a table, apply the heatsinks and apply a drop of nailpolish at each corner from ramsink to pcb. Holds them on there nicely. Then to remove apply some acetone to a paper towel and wipe off the nail polish.

Cool nail polish, I use some silicone and it works great maybe even to great.
I applied some all around the GPU while trying to install a stock CPU heatsink on it. :p:
I tworked so good that I had to spend a good hour using a scalpel to cut between the PCB and the heat sink, and even now there are still traces of it on the PCB.:slapass: :slapass:
PCB +Al+Silicone=No worise if a heat sink will fit on those little holes anymore:banana:
Great stuff use it if you can but put SMALL amounts cause it WORKS.:woot:

Tiny drops of 5-minute epoxy in the corners with regular thermal paste in the centre works for me.

When i put ramsinks on my 9800 i put as5 on the sink and then put a tiny bit of as5 thermal adhesive in the middle. I havent taken them off yet but i supose it wont be too hard.

Silicone holds well but I strongly recommend not to use it if there is ever a possibility you want to remove the heatsink without leaving residue all over the PCB. If you use it use very little, because there are no solvents to remove silicone. It has to be scraped off, and with all the tiny resistors etc on modern video cards getting it all off is a cast iron :banana::banana::banana::banana:. I found out the hard way on my X1900XT, there is no way to clean it other than scraping, and it is extremely difficult to get it all off.

Thanks for all the ideas, I went the epoxy route and am going to go set up the ramsinks now.

another possiblility might be hot glue or liquid electrical tape.
i just put superglue in the corners of my mem chips of video card and thermal paste in between. holds well for now. :)
but very small drops of superglue though.

The easiest way is by using 3M's adhessive pads.

I use the arctic alumina thermal epoxy for mounting heat sinks. You get the benefits of alumina and epoxy in one application.
